Talking MD Chapter #33 never ending thread.

So i thought why not start a thread for us to just shoot the breeze and see how long we can keep it alive. I see the TX boys got a boat load of posts on 1 thread.
So i am borrowing a back hoe tomorrow (Friday) to dig up my back yard to clean out my Lake outflow pipe. Anyone who wants to get muddy and help is welcome to come. We have lots of Beerz left over and i moved them to the fridge. That way they are cold.

Scott,

If you run a CAT-5E cable between your house and the Cave, I will terminate the cable so you can have Internet there.

I would help you, but I am on another business trip....

I have lots of Cat 5 cable and the tools to terminate it. But will it be able to send the signal down that long of a run? 400' i couldn't get a signal from a 50' i once ran.

Can't you just put some 100HP injectors in the router for extra ummph?

I may be able to stop by and help on Saturday.

Limit on cat5 cable is 300 meters - 400ft is pushing it, but it will probably work. It will work well enough to give us DTR in the cave. I've got the laptop in my basement for it. In case the rest of you geeks run out of terminations or tools, let me know.

300 Feet is the specification, but some go farther than others. I was just thinking if you were digging up the yard, it would be easy running the cable. If it does not work, I will see if I have any extra line drivers to push the signal. If not, I will see what the cost is. Also, you can extend a phone line if you wanted too.

Well the digging is no where near where the cable goes, but good idea anyway.

Scott, I will come up tomorrow night and help, let me know if you need me to bring anything. I have some fun offroad 4x4 machines that work well for moving mud in your cart you have up there, or just pulling stuff out of the way.

I'll even talk to the old man and see if he is willing to come up, been running hoes for 27 years so he is quick at it, and i'd like to get him involved in a little DTR action sooner or later.

I'd offer to help, but hopefully I'll get the trans put back in tomorrow with the new clutch. I got it all out/apart, except for the stock clutch/flywheel. Should be able to button it up tomorrow afternoon after a solid day of work.

Dohhhh!!!! You are correct, I was thinking feet, but the spec is 100 meters (328ft). It didn't look right when I typed it either. That spec also allows for a 15ft patch cable at each end, so I wouldn't worry about needing a repeater on the line. I've seen 500ft runs work just fine, and it isn't mission critical.

Had a good day yesterday, the boss took me out on his boat for a few hours. Had one fish get off during the fight, and the other one I got in the boat, a 37" throwback which is my first Rockfish ever. One the run back to the dock from the Bay Bridge we were rewarded with one heck of a view of the sunset also.

Spent 15 minutes on the dock at his house with some tiny little light action rods catching perch, when all the sudden i had a fight on my hands catching a fiesty 24" channel cat on this miniature rod set up and 4lbs test line. No pics tho because it was dark when we netted him and got him on the pier.

I know what ya meant, but not 300m, more like 300 ft/100 meters. Right around 328' is the limit. We have ran it longer than that when ordered to do it, it works, but not reccomended at all.

You could try some type of Wireless repeater, or for a better solution:

Cat-5 to fiber optic convertors (media convertor), they only cost around $40-$50 ea, I'll see if I can find some online. Basically run Cat-5 into the convertor, run the fiber to the destination, plug into the other media convertor, cat-5 out and into the router in the garage.

Just thought, only problem with a repeater is powering it, whether for cat5 or wireless...I think it would have to be an end-to-end deal...

Hmm I could have sworn when I was in the desert the media converters were only ~$50...still lookin.
