Travel info

Im going to Virginia Beach on Friday and Im taking my 34' travel trailer down with me. My GPS is telling me to take rt. 97 to MD32 W /MD3 S and take that to Crain hwy. It says to then take US 301 S and continue into Virginia. Once Im into Virginia, Im good to go.

I have never taken Crain Highway to US 301(I always took 95 S.) to go to Virginia Beach. Does anybody know if that is a good route to take, especially with a long travel trailer? Is it a trailer friendly route? The reason I ask is I would like to try a different route instead of going through D.C., but I have never been on that route. Any info would be appreciated.

301 is full of stop lights. 95 South to Richmond then out 264? would be the best bet. Or you could go over the bay bridge, run out 50 to rt 13 then south to VA.....

I usually take 95 S., but the last time I went through D.C. I got hammered with traffic jams. But lots of traffic lights will kill my fuel mileage...Oh well, I was just going to try a new route. Thanks for the info.

Has anybody been down 95 S. into Virginia lately??? How bad was it? Im just trying to do some homework to make the trip down as easy as possible.

I work in the DC area every day and around the beltway. Since the WW Bridge has most of its new bridge opened up its alot better. It really depends on what time you roll thru. Before 9am forget it headed south. After 300-330pm headed North Forget it. Other then that you should have zero issues with the WW Bridge or the Springfeild Mixxing Bowl.

Oh and 295 South, Inside the beltway, before 9am is a option. and it dumps you at the last exit before the bridge.

Thanks guys...I think I'm just gonna stick with 95 South. We are either leaving 10 am on Fri or 8 am on Sat. (Depending on work schedule). So I should be ok at those times. I have never gone down 301 so I had no idea it was all traffic lights. Thanks for the info.

I take 301/3 up to 97 when I head up to the Cave. The lights are spaced out pretty good for most of it and it seems like there are more lights for the north bound traffic than there is for south bound, I always get home quicker than I can get up there. I don't like being on the beltway, some parts of it are rough as hell and bounces the camper all over the place. Coming south on the 301 route shouldn't be bad, most of the heavy traffic is heading north on the weekends. When you start getting closer to the Waldorf area don't stay in the far right lane, it likes to change to turn only in several spots, so get in the next lane over and go your own speed. People in Waldorf drive like idiots, the only time I ever go there is when I'm travelling through. After you get through Waldorf it's a fairly nice ride with only a couple of lights. The bridge going over to VA has a toll, it'll probably be about $6 to $9, can't remember if it's $2 or $3 per vehicle and then per axle if you have a trailer. I go over that way all the time, it seems like a tight fit but it's not too bad. After that you just have to watch your speed cause to cops have a lot of neat little hiding areas along the route. There are a couple of descent size grades to go up and down also, but it's all 4 lane (2 each way) seperated. Once you get to I-95 you should be able to top-off at the Mr. Fuel for the cheapest diesel. It'll be on the right hand side before you get to 95. Then, I'm guessing, you take that down to 64. There is another route to take to get down there, but it's a lot of two lane road and slow.
