Quick Change Exhaust
Ok Guys, I got a thought in my head.
This whole camper and towing my jeep thing is bothering me. The only thing holding me back from using a truck camper in the Cummins is my nice and shiney 7" stack. To sell my trailer, buy or build a new one with living quarters would cost alot more. Cant buy a enclosed because they are to short in height so that would mean custom = more money.
Where the Exhaust 90's up into the bed, replace that with a Y-pipe. Build up some flanges for both ends and the base of the stack. Also a cap for the bottom side.
Wanna used the truck camper? Unbolt the stack and the cap....Cap the top of the y-pipe with the cap from underneth....Now I have exhaust dumped underneth.
I've thought about noise too...Never had exhaust dumped under the bed. How loud would it be? I do have a 12" Muffler, but no cat.
What do you guys think?
Rick

I know if it was straight piped and dumped underneath it is loud.. If you wanted to go extreme. I think grand rock makes a diverter pipe. So in theory when u take the stack off you could use your stock exhaust.
But this is just me thinking out loud.

I did something very similar with an old car. I put in a "y" with a plate over it. When I went to the drag strip, open the plate covering the flange on the end of Y, wide open exhaust. When I left the track, three allen screws and I was back through the mufflers for the drive home. You just have the added extra step of removing the stack. I think it will work.

With your fab skills you can make it very simple. Make and install a 3 bolt flange. Not sure if anyone makes them for 4" but you can make them out of some 1/4" plate, but make 3 of them. weld one to your exhaust pipe at the rear of the cab. Now modify your stack set-up so that it bolts onto the pipe using this 3 bolt flange, and whatever mounts the stack to the bed.
find someones old 4" tailpipe who went to stacks or just get some pipe and make an extension/tail pipe that runs back under the bed with a turn down, or angle out in front of the wheel. you could even install a hushpower or similar muffler in this extended section to quiet it down even more if you like. Also you would need a single hanger on the pipe running up to one of the original rubber isolators under the bed, i think there should be one before the axle. Wouldn't be hard to make (i've seen your fab work on the jeep so i know what you can do) and when it comes time to load up the camper for the weekend, you can change stack to shortened tail pipe in a matter of about 15-20 minutes.

Yeah I do beleive this will work. I'd perfer to get it as far back under the truck as possible, but I dont want to interfer with suspenion or bending up a whole tail pipe....
You know, KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid.
I found one in decent shape on the Shore I may go look at. I dont want to spend big money on a camper I'll use 5 times a year. So the basics is all I need.
