HI everyone I guess I'm what you call a newbe

I may be new here but not to diesels,I bought my first one in 1971 and it was a mercedes 170D and its been all diesels sence then I've had um all and the old cumaparts are the best,I'm sure there are some out there that will disagree on that but you all got to admit they are good runners.I have a 1991Suzuki sidekick that I put a 2.2 Isuzu in and a 1983 300td mercedes and last but not least a 1986 Chevy 4X4 silverado with a 3.9 4BT cummins hooked up to the Chevy 4 spd. Thats going to be my tow vehicle for my 17FT 1973 Scotty hilander camper.I've pulled the camper once with it from PA. down to here (FL) and got 19 MPG which I thought wasn"t to bad. Anyway thats all about me,I do have some questions but I'll save them for later, just wanted to say hi and let you know a little about myself,of course now you all know my life history,Wayne

HI everyone thanks for the big welcome, I'm new to this pc thing too,but its great to talk to people who are interested in the same things I am,which is diesel engines,I've had alot of um and alot I should have kept, like my 1946 international KB7 cab I narrowed down and put on my 1993 dodge 250 chaissis with a 5.9 cumapart ,I made it a tilt front end and used a 9' 50 dodge bed on the back so it made a hellova good looking rig, should have never sold that one,it was a one of a kind, wannadiesel you might have seen it around being from downingtown,I lived in Quakertown then it was painted forest green?you'd remember it if you saw it.Well anyway I have the Silverado with the 3.9 in it now but having a bit of a problem, runs real strong untill I use my wvo I have a two tank system with twin electric pumps feeding the IP,the oil is also heated to 180 before entering the IP,I start on diesel a after warm up switch to wvo, after switching to wvo ,sometimes 15 mins or so I start to get air bubbles in my return line and then the motor starts to die ,if I switch back to diesel she picks up and runs ok.I have 2 other vehicels that I run the same system a 2.2 Isuzu and a 300td benz and they both have been running fine on with the same setup,my question is the electric pumps are giving 5 to 9lbs of pressure to the IP could this be my problem? does the cummins need more pressure than the other two?I've talked on another forum about this problem and those guys gave me some very good suggestions, like go with a piston pump or put a fuel pressure gauge at the pump and see what kind of pressure I am getting there,I asked then how much fuel pressure a cummins Ip needs but haven't got an answer yet,so thats it in a nut shell guys, whatya think? Wbski ,PS txfiremedic, what did you mean ,don't forget to fill out your signature??

wbski:

Your "signature" is the area below your name with a little "history" about your truck, make, model, mods.etc. You can look at mine for an example. It has the description of both my 96' and 06' Dodge CTD Pickups.

To fill in your signature, go up towards the top of the page and to the left of where your name is you will see the section of the area you are presently in,
in other words here it is "Introductions/New People". Now, just below that you will see some words in a long blue/black banner that starts with the words; "User CP". Click on that and you will open all your personal information.
On the left of that screen you will see a "menu" and one of them will say "Edit Signature." Click on that and you can fill in the info about your truck.

Does your 3.9 have an inline pump or a rotary? The rotary pumps are perfectly happy with 5 psi, but an inline needs up in the 45 psi range.

You're getting air somewhere. Try pressurizing the tank to a couple psi and see what connections leak.

A blow gun on your air line with a rag stuffed in the fuel fill hole. Just a couple SMALL puffs should get you a couple psi. Have a friend in sight of the tank--it'll grow pretty well with 5psi.
