won't turn off completely

I am baffled. It was like when you shut off a gasser and it "diesels".

Took the kid to school, went to shut it off and it wouldn't. But I could turn the key back on and it would run normal. I look at the guages all seemed fine but tha voltage gauge, which was reading around 10 or so volts. So I thought tap the alternator with a hammer just to see if it made a difference. It didn't at first, but then I tried to shut it off again. The volts at that time were reading 14 like always.

I am at a loss. Could it be tha alternator? or what?

I tried searching and couldn't see to find anything.

Thanks for any help,

James

I am sure others will chime in, but you may have a sticking fuel shut-off solenoid. I have read previous posts which described similar symptoms as yours. I am not exactly sure where it is located, but I recall thinking it is on drivers side of engine near fuel filter cannister...

Good luck,

Gary

No, the solenoid wouldn't drop your voltage, but since you are in the cold part of the world, your intake heater grid will drop your volts dramatically. It was probably activating when you saw your gauge....

It sounds to me like you have a charging problum and the low volts are not enough to make the fuel shutoff work completely .

what about the selonoid contacts and thats where I believe the fuel shutoff is on the 12 valvers anyway not sure if the 24s are the same? but look up wont start in help area and I believe 89-2003 are affected by the selenoid contacts in the starter

I thought the heater but, it was plugged in last night and I had driven about 2 miles to the school and exceeded 25 mph to get there.
