Water in Fuel?

I need some some help with my dad's truck. He just called and said this morning on the way to work his truck was sputtering and then shutting off. It did this several times and always restarted. On the way home had the same problem. I told him that it could be water in the fuel but I am not sure. His truck is a stock 03 model. any help is aprreciated.

Water should get caught in the filter/seperator.

Maybe an air leak in the fuel system?

As for the whitesmoke im not too sure Usually thats associated with coolant getting in your engine ie: blown head gasket, broken water jacket or something along those lines. There are other things though that could cause it. As for the coughing and sputtering the only time ive had this happen to me on my 03 is when I had my fuel lines gel up on me and once when the stock lift pump went kaput. I was towing a trailer and had to baby the truck home, it still ran but sometimes would studder and then stall out. Tell your dad to put his key in the ignition and turn the key back and forth 3 times without starting the truck then some trouble codes should come up where the odometer reading is. Copy the codes down and look em up in the internet. Thats what ive done in the past and it seemed to work well for the most part to identify the problem.
