Truck wont move after shifting into D

Hey Guys,

First cold morning of the season 38 degress. I idled the truck for about 10 minutes and shifted into "D" and the truck isn't moving. I can shift into all of the gears (PRND) and the truck doesn't respond. The fluid level mark is between the two marks for cold. Any suggestions?

Update: pushed the truck in neutral and shifted into D. The gear indicator is now in "4" and wont move and now CEL with P0700.

P0700 is a generic Transmission Control System code. Do you have any secondary codes? Have you tried to shut it down and restart? It sounds almost like a computer glitch or an intermittent short in the wiring harness somewhere...

Even after clearing the codes the P0700 was visible. I even reflashed the ECM with the Smarty and still had the P0700. I restarted the truck and was able to drive it to the dealer and it drove like normal. I am hoping it really is just a sensor or something small like that. I will update you once the dealer gets his hands on it.

I'd say it's not in the ECM. I'm not sure how the 6.7s are set up, but my last auto truck had a separate powertrain control module (PCM) that operated the transmission. Here's hoping for good news. Also...the dealership should still honor the warranty for repair if it's not a mechanical breakage issue. Good luck.

The dealer says there are too many codes to determine what the problem is. They want to take the transmission out to check for problems. Any suggestions?

If it were me I would record all the codes, reset them, clean the battery terminals and have a looksee at the grounds. Then drive it until another code is set, give the computer a chance to do it's job.

You clearly haven't seen the what goofing with an aftermarket downloader does when looking at the system with a real scan tool. I'm sure there are a bucket load of codes and personally I wouldn't look at it, especially under warranty.

Not to get into a match here, but would YOU as a Technician recommend to "Remove the transmission to check for any problems"?

I didn't say stay away from a dealer, just that one.

Obviously haven't seen the truck..... but there is a GREAT possibility that the trans will have to be removed to repair. Not a common issue, but dates back to the 545RFE trans that was behind the Hemi equipped trucks.

Safecracker, where are you located. Maybe someone with know of a good tranny shop near you. I know there are some valvebody issues with this trans and can prevent it from going into gear. But I can't tell you what that would be. I do know that it sounds more like a Valve Body issue rather than having your entire trans rebuilt.
Let us know where you are. I am sure you will get some good tips on where to take it.
