truck luging down the road off and on, and my other truck already in the shop!

I have a 92 D250 12v of course. I just had it in the shop because i would be going down the road and it would start sputtering, spitting puffs of white smoke and trying to die. If i limped it home i would make it. it did it off and on, then so bad i barely made it to the repair shop. they said i had 2 turbo leaks, replaced a gasket and a hose, and the truck has been fine for 3 days. It idles fine, and starts without a glitch. I have replaced the fuel filter 3 times now within 500 miles, thinking it was a bad tank or filter. been draining in case of water, making no difference. Now, it's doing it again, and just as bad. I checked the previous problem areas, and nothing. I have a welding business and this is my backup truck. my other one is already in the shop. any help is greatly appriciated.

It sounds like you are sucking in air or have a bad lift pump. Look all the fuel supply lines over carefully for any dampness, that is an air leak. If everything looks good, try throwing a lift pump at it.

Has nothing to do with the engine, they are 100 percent mechanical injection.

Make sure the fuel heater wires are not shorting out. I have seen this happen when replacing fuel filters. The screw that holds fuel heater on also holds fuel filter. Sometimes when fuel filter is removed the heater rotates with the filter. The wires to heater will then short out on the bracket. If that's ok then check the fuel solenoid valve at the injection pump. Make sure the connections are tight. The nut sometimes will loosen and cause bad connections there. Check that wire and make sure it's not shorting out anywhere on the brackets. If all that looks good then the valve itself could be bad. If truck is a no start and you have power to the valve you most likely have a bad valve. You can unscrew the valve and remove plunger and spring, reinstall valve and truck should start. You can run it like this but will be necessary to use manual shutdown lever on pump to shut off engine. Valve come with new plunger and spring. Good Luck.

A weak lift pump could cause it.
