Truck Low On Power
Truck Low On Power
Ok so first things first, we have a 98.5 dodge 2500 sport diesel, so I'm pretty sure its a 24 valve but I'm not 100% sure. Now, the truck has almost no power and cranks for a while before starting about 2-3 seconds. It has about 150000 on the odometer. Now more problems, the truck stalls when in gear, but in park it will idle. Could this be possibly caused by just a fuel filter? I know it hasnt been changed in a long time. Please help, this truck is a slug compared to our 7.3 ford dump truck, and I know the cummins has more ***** than this. Thanks for any advice in advance.
can you scan for codes?
if it is a 98.5 it is 24 valve, if it is a 98 then it is 12 valve.....99.9%of the time
do you have any fuel leaks? check you lines filter and returns for ANY sign of dampness this can cause aireation which is a bad deal for the pump as it goofs timing and is said to shorten life.
I know you have heard this before but..............
GET A FUEL PRESSURE GUAGE ON THE TRUCK!!!!!!!!
does the truck give you any check engine light, smoke, noises??? did it run good then just puke? If you can give more info we can help you get in the right direction
just remember you need fuel, air, timing, compression, and exhaust , if you have those it will run if not it is time to figure out what is missing.
good luck

Actually it doesnt say 24 or 12 valve on the cover thats why I wasnt sure. But yes it is a 98.5 so I guess it must be a 24 valve. Now with the fuel filter, are there any how tos on how to do it? The air filter is dirty also so that will be replaced, but the fuel filter hasnt been replaced for the past couple years I bet.(it was used by my fathers workers.
) I can see the filter cover has a small nut in the middle and two banjo bolts, do I need to loosen them before I remove the cover or do I just loosen the nut in the center and leave the 2 banjo bolts connected to the cover?
The check engine light does not come on, and I dont have a way of checking the codes. How hard is it to install the fuel pressure guage? It wasnt a recent thing, I believe the truck just got weaker over time. Only things maintenance wise that have been done to it over the years were regular oil changes, air filter and the fuel filter was changed once or twice a while ago. So now I'm trying to get the truck running like it should be.
yfz450guy, I love my yfz, heres a pic of mine, you have one also I see.

Loosen the nut and ease the filter housing out. Be sure to hold on to it or it will fall and make a mess. It's best to re-fill the filter housing with fresh fuel before bumping the starter to regain prime. Do a search and you will find better instructions then mine.

since you do not have a fp gauge I would not fill the canister manually but instead use the bump the starter technique so you can observe the volume of fuel the lp is moving to the filter. be warned that not replacing the fuel filter can be a big mistake on a 24 valve. a guage is easy to install and cheap to buy but priceless in what it will save you long term. I would suspect lift pump issues and would reccemond a pusher pump to be safe. if I am wrong and you install a pusher all you are doing is saving yourself more money down the road.
nice yfz. how do you like the elka's?
is that laker plastic?
how di you upload a pic? i have tried but can't seem to get it right.

Thanks, the elkas are awesome, along with the JB Racing LT a arms and RPM axle, they are the best mod I have done yet. The plastics are in fact laker customs, if you give me a PM I can hook you up with a guy that sells them for a great price. I posted the pic using IMG tags, what you do is put [img]then the link to the pic here[/img], if you have photobucket they do this automatically for u so u just copy and paste. Yours is definately older, if I remember mine is something like 3700 or 4700.
High country, thanks for the advice, I had a feeling not replacing the fuel filter was definately a big mistake, do you think the lift pump could go out because of this? Is it easy installing the fp guage? I looked on the genosgarage site, which one would you reccommend most out of those? Thanks for all the help so far guys, I appreciate it.
