Truck died while driving. Need shop advice

My truck died near Angels Camp CA yesterday. No smoke, not noise, nothing on the dash, I wasn't pushing it at all. After coasting to the shoulder I started it and it ran for maybe 5 seconds, then ran for maybe 15 seconds, then wouldn't start at all.

Towed to a shop in Angels and got a ride home. This AM, I called the shop and they said it started fine and seemed to run OK for them, but the check engine light is on. They say they don't have what it takes to diagnose and suggested I go to either dealer or a shop in Stockton they think well of.

Any ideas, or recomendations for a competent shop between Angels and the bay area?

Thanks.

Sounds like the lift pump to me. It's covered under warranty if you have less than 100,000 miles.

I was also guessing some sort of a fuel starvation. Does the 04 have a lift pump? I was thinking the pump problem was in the earlier years. If it is a lift pump, should I go stock or is there a better one out there I should go with. I'm after reliability, not performance.

Don't know what code it threw. I just remembered noticing white smoke when I started it, which I had never seen before. The shop where its sitting says they don't have what it takes to connect to the computer. I'll call them and ask if they can do the key on/off thing to get the codes.

what would a P0628 mean?

I got the shop to dump the codes through the odometer for me.

The two codes were

P0148 High Pressure Common Rail (HPCR) Fueling Error Checksum
P0628 Low Voltage Detected At The Fuel Lift Pump Relay

I guess this means its lift pump time?

What is the best way to go to replace it. Should I drop the tank and put in an original part, use some aftermarket pump, or one of the frame mounted ones that don't require me to drop the tank?

Thanks for all of the advice I've gotten so far.

If its under warranty, let a dealer mess with it, otherwise take your pick of aftermarket ones out there.

I wish it were that easy. I bought the truck with the engine apart and a Banks six gun installed. The dealer had voided the powertrain warranty. In addition, I didn't know that I had to pay some fee to Dodge to transfer the warranty when I bought the thing so I never did it.

I've got a call in now to a dealer to see if they'll cover it.

From reading more here, it sounds like my pump is near the fuel filter and the Dodge recomendation is to replace it with one that's in the tank.

If Dodge won't cover it under warranty, is there an aftermarket one that's more reliable than the others? I don't plan on doing any high performance stuff to it. I just want it to last.

FASS, Airdog, Raptor, and some others are all used by some here. Do a search and see which one you want to go with.

I posted in the 3rd gen forum, but Dodge is fixing under the previously voided warranty.
