trans problem
trans problem
my 02 4X4 is sick the trans will not shift up to park or neutral. So now I can't start it. I talked to a friend of my and he said he had a simlar problem. He told me to pull the pan off and see if the pin for kick down band? is laying in the pan. I pulled the pan off and found nothing oil looks good and no shaving where in the pan. I moved the leakage back and forth and watched it in the valve body there is a little pistion connected to the leakage inside and it will barely move. that is all I know to do till sunday when he gets here but if anybody has any ideas please let me know. Thanks Nick
The most frequent cause of a transmission failing to allow you to shift into park or neutral is the linkage. On the bottom of the front shift rod (the one running down from the column to the first bellcrank) is a spring, an adjusting swivel, and a lock bolt. I suspect that adjusting swivel has moved down the rod.
To adjust, jack up the vehicle so you have good access to the linkage and the shift arm on the side of the transmission. Unlock the shift lever. Loosen the adjusting swivel lock bolt so the swivel will slide up and down the shift rod. Then move the selector arm on the transmission itself all the way to the rear so it locks in the park detent. Then move your inside selector to Park and adjust the adjusting swivel so that the selector is in Park while the transmission is still in park. Torque the adjusting swivel bolt to 90 inch pounds. Shift the transmission through each selection and you should feel the arm on the transmission click each detent as it selects.
