Tranny problems

Purchased a 2001 Ram 2500 with 112K miles and an automatic tranny a couple months ago. I'm starting to have the following tranny problems: 1) Often, I can't get it out of first (especially when it's cold). The thing will rev all the way up to 3000 rpm, but won't shift. Eventually after driving around the block for 5 minutes it will start to work properly. 2) Does not seem to shift at the right time. For example, between gears will go up to about 2000 rpm before shifting. I can make it shift at a lower rpm if I take it up to about 1600 rpm, take my foot off the gas, let the RPMs go down to about 1000 and then accelerate again - then it will shift. 3) Finally, I'm thinking that 1st gear isn't working properly - very sluggish in 1st, revs up alot, but seems very slow to pick up speed in 1st. I tried going from a stop in 2nd gear and the truck seems to work wonderfully (only did this as an experiment - don't do it regularly). 4) I'm getting terrible gas mileage in town (under 12 mpg) - could these tranny problems be contributing to this? ANYWAY, THE MAIN PROBLEM IS #1 ABOVE. The dealer I bought the truck from said the tranny needs to be rebuilt???!!!
(I posted this in a different place before I noticed this HELP forum - sorry about that, I'm kind of new to this forum.)

same tranny problem

I have a 1995 Dodge Turbo Diesel with 184,000 miles and my trans is doing the exact same thing that yours is doing. I called a tranny shop and told them the symptoms. They said it might just be my torque converter, but to cover they're edited by admin they said it is possible that the whole transmission may need to be rebuilt. If you find out whats wrong with yours, could you let me know?

Thanks,
Steve
