Question Tire Pressure for 285/75R16's?

I have an '02 2500 Q/C 4x4 and put 285/75R16's on it. The sticker in the door says to run 65 psi front and 80 psi rear for the 245's that come as OEM equipment on the truck. The book in the glove box gives pressures for the optional 265's that came with the truck from Dodge. Just checked my pressures after a rotation/balance at a national chain shop. I had 37.5 psi and 42 psi in the front tires, 41 psi and 38 psi in the rears
I put 55 in the front and 60 in the rear (I normally run unloaded, and when I haul a trailer, it is about 1000 lbs). The tire's sidewalls say a maximum of 65 psi when fully loaded (D load range).
What psi's are folks with 285's running? I need to try to get this set correctly before the morning.

Thanks,
~Rob

I have a 98.5 Q/C 4x4 5 spd. with the stock steel rims, I've run 245's 265's 285's and 315's on my dodge. I run unloaded most of the time and I normally get about 40,000 per set of tires at best. To be honest, I'm running 35 lbs in my 285's now (UNLOADED), only because I'm trying to get them to wear better. I've been running 50 lbs all around and it always wears the center out first. I think 285's are the best looking and most functional tire so far and that is what my last two sets have been, but they balloon out on the stock rim, and therin lies the problem and tendency to wear down the middle. Good luck getting even wear on the stock rims. Oh, by the way my Dad has an 02 Q/C 4x4 auto and he puts michelins on his truck. He swears by them and he got 75,000 out of his last set, but they were 265's.
In fact his came with 265's from the factory why did yours have 245's???

Thanks for the info Dlcorrie. I'm going to run them at 55/60 and see how I like that. If I don't, I will try the 50/50. I just don't like how the tires look on the stock rim (ballooned out) with 35 psi in them. My truck came with the optional 265's from the factory. The standard OEM size from the factory is 245.

at my last 3 tire changes, i ran 285 d's. i have bought the exact same tire every time from pep boys-futura dakota. they have all worn so evenly with only checking and adjusting the pressures that i have completely stopped wasting my time with rotating them. i have always run 42 front and 40 rear when unloaded and, 65 psi (max on sidewall) when loaded. the last set that i changed lasted approximatly 1 3/4 years (with my driving style, that s a miracle). and, by the way, i run them on 16x8 amer racing baja wheels-which just looks right.

I have run my 285's at around 50 psi but I seem to keep increasing the psi. I now am running 65 in the front and 50 in the rear, unloaded. I was running 60 in the back but it was way to much. When I tow I will go up to 60 again in the rears. I cant amagine 80 psi. They must ride like iron.

FRANKV569,

What kind of truck do you have? How many miles do you get out of the Dakotas?

I've been looking at 285's at Pep Boys and will probably buy them next week.

The factory Michelin's on my truck were the worst tires I've ever owned. They barely got 30k miles and had about as much traction as a marble on glass. Right now I'm running BFG All Terrains. They're going to last 50k, but they have never worn evenly at any pressure.

well, doing some rough math here -- 80 miles a day commute on them (at 80mph of course) x 5 days a week + weekend b.s.=550 miles/wk. x 50 weeks a year= 27,500 miles/year. (thats probably just the unloaded miles). x1 3/4 years that the last set lasted for=48,125 miles and they still had 2-3 /32s tread left. not too shabby for tires that only cost about $100 a piece new(before the taxes and road hazard , etc). when i turned the last ones in for pro-rate adjustment, i ended up paying like $52 a piece for the new ones!

I'm sold!

Those puppies ought'a do me just fine. My driving is 90% highway and only about 5% loaded. I'm retired and usually not in a hurry, so my speed is usually around 65 mph.

Please fill in your sig so we can see what kind of truck you have.

As I said earlier, the sidewall says 65 Max when fully loaded. I was trying to get an idea of what folks are running unloaded.

I have the 285 bridgestones and I used to run them at 65 all the way around, but the rear rides like a rock . I tow at that pressure, but I will drop down to 45 or 50 in the rear and see how that works.

And I have the factory 8 inch aluminum rims.

And, part 2, These bridgestones suck for traction in the rain. Can't wait for the snow to fly.
