Did you give the Cummins parts guy the engine serial number? The correct part for one model engine may not be the correct one for another. The ser # is on the data plate that is on the left side of the gear housing.

That may be correct. I carry a spare in my toolbox and the only numbers I can make out on the box are the last digits, 499.

Thanks for the help guys. The guy at the cummins dealer kept saying that he needed the engine code off the valve cover. I could not find any numbers on the valve cover. I finally saw the ones on the timing cover but I already had the part number by then. Thanks so much fellas.

not the valve cover the timing case- the CPL table number and serial number are the most important numbers on that engine- every engine is built using them and parts for one engine are different from parts for the same engine with a different CPL.

Cummins offered 3 (I think) t-stats for 6bt engines, including the "upgraded" one Dodge issued to stop the needle swing addressing the complaints from all the newbs used to gas engines.

Problem with the "upgraded" stat that keeps the gauge from swinging back and forth is it takes longer to warm up and when it does the engine runs at a cooler temp.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the temp gauge swinging up and down on a 12 valve.
In fact the way Dodge dealt with gauge swinging complaints was starting in '98 they electronically turned the coolant gauge into an idiot light. The temp still swings up and down when the stat opens and closes, the driver just can't see it

Well mine is swingin up and down alot and it goes almost all the was to the H before it opens. The one I was workin on is fixed and workin good. It has 3 jiggle pins in it and seems to work good so far. Now I gotta get one for my truck.
