04' Looses power and makes loud popping noises

So I was out driving today and my 04' CTD (305/555 engine) decided to give me a new headache. I put my foot into it, not WOT but near and it revved up to about 2700rpm and all of a sudden fell on its face and started pouring out black smoke. There was no boost whatsoever like the turbo had been removed. This was with my diablosport on extreme. I came home and set it back to stock and took it out for a spin again.

Around 3000rpm it did the same thing and made a loud popping noise (similar to a backfire in a gasser) with a bit of blueish grey smoke coming out. So I know its getting fuel but obviously something is failing in the fuel system and not letting it combust. My fuel filter was changed recently.

I'm thinking my lift pump is putting out next to no pressure (I can hear it running but that means almost nothing) and the rail is draining, the FCA is pooched or I have an injector(s) acting up.

Thoughts?
