Thermostat and small hose on thermostat housing questions?

My 96 has a small hose going from the head to the thermostat housing, looks like a bypass? Just curious as to why second gens have these, I've never seen one on first gens. Anyone know an aftermarket part # for this hose offhand? Also, my temp guage does the fluctuation thing, mostly on the highway. I remember hearing about an updated thermostat, is it even worth changing? Thanks

Think the dealer is the only source for the small curved bypass hose.

You're fighting something that isn't wrong with fluctuating coolant temps.
The problem is the location of the temp sensor, not the thermostat.

That's good. Dealer got me for almost $50 years ago for that silly little hose.
