stuck in 5th gear

my friend called me today and said that his truck is stuck in 5th. it is a 97 4x4 5speed he said he had to throw it in 4low and drive it home but the stick won't move out of 5th. this wouldn't be the 5th gear nut would it or he would have just lost the gear. he just bought the truck last week and now its setting there anyone ever had this problem or know how to fix it

They will jam up, gunracer recently beat me to a truck that was stuck in fifth gear, and it came loose after pulling the truck backwards off the trailer might pm him and check out how it occured, I have known some to come loose while pulling the truck and letting the clutch in and out while putting pressure on the stick, backwards and forwards. I do not know if he ever went into it and repaired/secured it afterwards. I recently went into mine and installed a fully splined mainshaft to correct the fifth gear saga. I would check with Blumenthas tranns in Okc as they recently came out with a newley revised mainshaft that will stop the fifth gear problems. I have some photos of the fifth gear shaft in my gallery the last photo shows the new shaft on top and the old one on the bottom with the full splines and full threads. Goodluck,,Rick

Had it happen in an 01 I had twice. The first time i took it to the the dealer and they took the rear cover off and got it loose and then cleaned the tranny real good. 2nd time we got it loose but i dont remember how. The main cause for that problem from what the dealer could figure was not changeing the fluid enough
