Started, Ran (10 seconds), Stalled, Now Won't Start........

This is on my '99, 2nd gen., 24 valve with 219k miles.
So I started it up this morning, it ran rough for like 10 seconds then quit. I tried to restart it a few times with no sucsess, (it turns over but wil not fire). I had a similair situation back in Jan '07, and it ended up being the lift pump. Since then no issues till now.
So I talked to a diesel mechanic today, he said it's either the lift pump again, or the injector pump. He said $1500 or $1700 for the injector pump (depending on what the vin says) and $255 for the lift pump (this is parts only)
Any thoughts or suggestions?

the bushing connecting the impeller to the motor in you lift pump is gone, EG. you need a lift pump. DOnt try to run it to avoid ruining the VP. When you turn the key to the on posistion, does it make the motor sound from the back of the engine aera?

When I turn the key to the "on" position I don't hear anything running.

I don't have the tools to check the fuel pressure, I really limited in the tool department when It comes to this truck. I have basic sockets and wrenches but no specialty tools for working on this truck and I'm still learning about the truck and don't feel real comfortable just "jumping in".
So lift pump sounds to the problem here?

Just got done dealing with a similar issue. The pump will only run if you bump the starter for just a fraction of a second. Then you'll be able to hear it running.

Bump the starter with the hood open then look down on the driver's side of the engine. My problem was with a leak letting air into the fuel system. You should be able to hear that lift pump running loud and clear with no fuel getting out anywhere.

Check that and let us know.

You can read over my thread here, sounds really similar:

I had it towed to JT Diesel Perfermance http://jtdieselperformance.com/Home_Page.php last night, he called me this morning and said I had 0 fuel pressure. It ended up being the lift pump, **** thing only lasted 14,000 miles. (Please tell me more about this Fass system).
On the bright side of all of this, I did find an honest diesel mechanic in JT, he charged my $125 less than the "other" shop did for the exact same repair.
Thanks for the help everyone, much appreciated.
