Ok guys just recently i have a pretty bad squeek gets faster or slower depending on speed and i can only make the sound while in 4wd. Im not sure where to start as i would think its bearings but it doesnt make a sound when in 2wd. Are there any other parts to take a look at? Has any one else experienced something similar?

Ujoints 1st

 

Jack her up on all four. Get under it and listen for the squeak. You should be able to hear and locate it. A mechanic's stethoscope may help. Needless to say, due to the rotating stuff under there, do it carefully with a safety person present.

 

Got to be the U-Joints

 

can those make a popping/cracking noise too? thats what mine does. and how much does it normally cost to replace them? what about ball joints?

 

Thanks everybody.....sure enough its the ujoints i can free turn the front drive shaft and about every half turn is a noticable squeek. Would i be better off replacing all of the ujoints, or is this not really a concern? All were very solid no wobble-the 4wd just doesnt get used to often. Maybe lube them up and see if it goes away?

 

replace the ujoint and put the grease gun on it every so often.
