Sputtering and sluggish on acceleration
Sputtering and sluggish on acceleration
I had a problem on Saturday where the fuel filter was plugged. I replaced the filter and it ran fine for a few short rides around towm - 3 miles maximum per trip. This morning on my way to work, was at 55-60 for about 8 miles, stopped at an intersection and when I started out again, it was sputtering and sluggish like the filter is plugged AGAIN!
What a pain in my rear.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Kevin

The 1st are put your truck details in signature , then we can get a better guess on what may be helpful , then your location , someone may be in the area that can help , a hands on is always the easiest .
But to really help , it sounds like you may have found the problem , then went looking for an other " change filter " , maybe some bad fuel , or have you done anything to the truck before this happened ? like using bio-diesel or some work / maintainance ?
Drain some fuel into a clean glass container to see if there is anything in there , may need to let settle for a few hours for some things to show .

It's an '03 2500 with CTD / auto
I have been running WVO at 25% that is filtered three times before going in the tank. Never a problem until now.
The one thing I was unable to do on Saturday was to remove all of the "old" fuel from the bowl prior to re-filtering. Could this have caused a problem? Otherwise, I'll just change out the filter and run this tank empty.
Another question - can I "empty the fuel tank by taking the incoming hose from the tank and pumping the fuel into a container? It has the in-tank electric pump.
BTW, I'm located in Whitewater, Wi.

Are you using a 2 tanks system ?
Are you heating the fuel ?
When asked or someone brings up the subject of alt fuels , I suggest that using WVO , SVO is only to make bio diesel with , but should not be used as fuel , even with the 2 tank & heat system .
Yes disconnecting the fuel hose from tank & running pump to empty is OK .

I did not remember when the common rails fuel systems came out , till last talking to a buddy .
Being that it is a common rail truck , there are issues with the pressure systems causing polymerization of those fuels , bio diesel and much more so the WVO & SVO .
I hope you are not put off by my stating the issues with WVO , its just that I have been into the alt energy for many yrs , adding to that , the alt fuels the few , there is just too much info indicating problems with the application of what fuel to what systems , as an example the P pump systems being more able to use a wider verity of fuels than all the other systems , the high pressure brings in a hole new added issue , seems like the manufactures are making the systems less able to handle fewer fuel options .

THanks for all the replies. I think I've got it figured out.
Best I can tell is that it was just a burp of air left over from when I changed out the filter. The other thing I thought of is the old Ford "wiggle" test. I drove at about 20 mph and wiggled the steering wheel and made some abrupt stops and starts thinking something was caught up in the tank.
The darn thing runs good now. Go figure????
