shut off solenoid?
I'm a new member to the site and have a problem mabe you can help with, I have a 96 1 ton with the 5.9 diesel that I love except one problem that pops us periodically. The problem is the truck wont start ocassionally, and the accelerator feels stiff under my foot, and I can turn the key off/on/off/on several times and the accelerator pedal feels normal, or I can stomp the pedal a couple of times and the truck starts. I think it may be the shutoff solenoid so I called the dodge dealer and was quoted $500, is there a way to confirm this is the problem? Thanks, Dean

Welcome to the DTR!
You didn't say, but I assume the starter is working properly?
DON'T get a solenoid from that dealer! Rip-off!
If you wind up needing one, check here- http://fostertruck.com/dodge/default.htm (Scroll down) Also check your local Cummins dealer. They are on Ebay for sale, sometimes.
Open hood. Turn key to run position, but do not start truck. If the solenoid did not get pulled up, do it manually. If it stays up, it could be the big relay on the firewall, above the master cylinder/booster. Or it could be the blue wire on the driver's side battery. That is a fusible link.

Your shutdown sol is probably fine. The starter contacts and relays are the most common problem with your complaint. Get the kit and do it yourself and save a bunch. Welcome abord!!!

I had a throtle cable recall on my 96 and had the sticky throtle some what like you describe. When they replaced the cable the old on had only on strand of wire hoding it together. This probably does not relate to your starting problem but you might want to check out the throtle cable in the process.

I'd go for the relais first- or if you've got a DMM and a friend you can try to provoke the hard start situation and then measure the voltage at the cables of the solenoid- it should be plain system voltage on both while cranking (the 3rd is ground)
If there is lower than 12V but still some voltage the relais is the most definite suspect - You can get one for cheap from fostertruck, (any 12V should have one in the glovebox IMHO, can save a lot of troubles)
