Rear yoke play...

So I thought I lost my rear pinion shaft seal as there was diff. fluid covering the underside of the bed and everything in between. I went and bought a new seal and went to replace it tonight and noticed that there is a bit of lateral play in the yoke. I checked the yoke nut and it is tight. Does the yoke need shimming, or am I missing something? Does the slinger do anything, could that be it? how much play shoud there be, I would assume none?

Thanks for the help in advance!

Is the yoke moving independently of the pinion? That would be really weird. Seems more likely to me that the pinion bearings are toasted.

I think the yoke and shaft are moving. I did not get a chance to get under there last night but going to give it a go tonight. If I replace just the outer bearing do I need to deal with shimming? If so I think I will have to bring it somewhere as I think that will be over my head.

Thanks

Yes, the preload needs to be right. You need to replace both bearings, and if it's been run a while the R&P set may need to be replaced.

Thankfully I caught it right away. Maybe only put 25-30 miles before I noticed the diff. fluid spray. I will have to take it in... I have a great place so hopefully they don't beat me up too bad on the $....

Thanks.
