your lift pump will be at the back of the engine on the drivers side. It is small but has a little lever on the bottom side. Open some injectors on the top to push out air and pump till you see fuel coming out. Good luck.

Re:Ran my truck out of fuel

Try "bumping" the starter . Just enough to engage the bendix and leave the key in the on position. This will allow the fuel pump to run for 15 sec or so ;;;;;;;;;do this a half doz times and then try it you may check to see if you are getting fuel to the filter -------if not, your pump may have gone south.

When I pulled the fuel line off of the lift pump it bumped the starter and can fell suction on inlet side of the pump. Is there a manual pump on all of the lift pumps? Am I just retarded. I cant for the life of me find this. Please help

Re:Ran my truck out of fuel

Answered your message before seeing this . If you can feel suction on the inlet side, hook everything back up and open the filter drain and try to pressurise the tank a little ----- the return line will have to be open for this to work. Sounds like it is just having trouble picking up fuel from the tank.
Not all pumps have the manual valve mostly just the older ones sounds like yours is straight electric.
Good luck Gary
Re:Ran my truck out of fuel

There are two brass plugs at the top of your fuel filter canister.
Loosen the one closest to the front of the engine, this will be the "Post-Filter" side (good place to plumb a fuel pressure guage by the way )
Turn the key to the on position and "Bump" the starter. Don't crank the engine, you just want to hear the starter engage for just a second, leave key in "ON" position.
You should hear the lift pump run for approx. 30 seconds.
Repeat as needed until you see fuel starting to come out of the loosened plug. Turn the key to the off position and tighten the plug.
Now you can try to start the engine.
You might have to let the truck crank over for what will seem like an eternity, but only crank for 30 sec. at a time or you can over heat the starter. let it cool for about a minute between tries. This should get you running.
If not let us know and we'll go into the injector bleeding instructions.

Hope this helps

Ed

Must be a 98 1/2 if it has the electric LP. Follow SHovelheads procedure above and it will start.

Re:Ran my truck out of fuel

ok im confussed here my dad has a 98 1/2 and it is a 12v the way all the talk on here is that a 98 1/2 is a 24v so if his truck is a 98.5 it should be a 24v which there is no manual pump. but on the other hand my dads says right on it 98 1/2 with a 12v and it have the manual pump right where ur fuel filter is! just got to pump the crap out of it and then it should fill the canister and then after that if it wont start bleed the lines.

Re:Ran my truck out of fuel

The 98.5s were right at the transition point where the 12 valvers ended and the 24 valvers were introduced.
The 1st 24Vs are commonly called the 98.5 trucks.

Re:Ran my truck out of fuel

One guy I talked to said the 24 valves were available on 98.5 trucks but that the 12 valve was still available on them also. I am confused now. : :

I hate them half year designations, I feel like I missed something cause I never wrote 1998.5 on any checks or anything.

Re:Ran my truck out of fuel

I just went through this on my 12v. I'm not sure if you have a 12 or not, so I'm going to post it for you. Near the lift pump is a primer. This looks like the rubber push type primers that you would see on a lawn mower. It's black and because of the grime it will blend in very well. It doesn't help to be almost out of sight. It is slightly behind the lift pump-but right next to it. Grab a bright flashlight and looking from over the battery, you might be able to spot it. On top of the fuel filter are a bunch of lines. The line that goes forward to the injection pump has a small bolt on top of it. It looks like a double bolt-kinda weird. Crack that small bolt loose. Now start pushing the primer. Keep on pushing until you get clear bubble free fluid out. Now close the bolt. Loosen the banjo fitting on the injection pump and purge that line. You can now try to start the truck. You will have to crank for nearly 30 seconds until it will start. Hold the throttle wide open. The injection pump will have fuel supplied to it and the system is self bleeding. If it won't start in 30 seconds wait a few minutes and then try again. If you have fuel to the pump it will start.
