Unhappy Fuel Gauge Reads 1/4, Truck Ran out of Fuel

Good afternoon all! I just got a call from my Bro. He has a 04.5 2500, CTD, 4x4, Quad cab. He said the truck just ran out of fuel and the fuel gauge is reading 1/4 of a tank. They towed truck to fuel station, added fuel, and the truck still wont start and the fuel gauge reads empty. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem? Thanks Tye

Had it on my 2000 2500. It shut down in the middle of Atlanta doing 65mph in rush hour. Hairy situation. It turned out to be the fuel sending unit. It was empty but read 1/4 full. Funny thing was I was just getting over to exit a fuel up. Now I never let it go below 1/2 full.

Is this ANOTHER thing I should worry about when I pick mine up?? Any recall or T.S.B. for this? I think its total B.S. that you have to drive on pins and needles when you get past 1/2 tank.

I really love this site, but everytime I'm on it, theres always a new problem!!

I talked to the dealer tonight and appearently the Lift pump failed, only 15k on the truck. So here is what there doing. Appearently there is a TSB about this, so here is what there going to do. They are updating the fuel system/supply like what is being used in the new 05. They are removing/replaceing lift pump with an In-tank fuel pump module and retro fitting the truck. Appearently they have the parts and the truck will be done tomorrow.
Needless to say my Bro is not happy. He was driving the truck and crossing a busy intersection when the truck died! He had my 2yr old nephew and 4month old niece in the truck with him. Anyways everyone is safe, so we'll see what happens.

He's asking about the FASS system that I have on my truck.

You are right about keeping it 1/2 all the time around town. The excess fuel from the LP cools the IP. Keep your tank full as possible all the time. Never less than 1/2 around town.

A few minutes with paper and pen will give you a good range figure. My 05 will go 550 miles before it is necessary to refuel so I make it a point to stop and fuel up at about 475 or so. Plenty of reserve in case fuel stops are few and far between. As for the lift pump, I think that they have the problem solved with the new pump setup. These pumps are much happier pushing rather than pulling. Also, a good fuel additive will help lub the pump as well as the injectors.
