installed fuel pressure gauge, reads zero

i installed a westach gauge today with a electric sending unit today and i can't get a reading from it. all the wiring is correct and the sening unit is in the rear port of the fuelfilter housing. i believe this is the prefilter but i tried it in the other port as well and got no reading there either. gauge does not move any.

the one thing that did happen during installation was the hot wire and ground was switched and this pegged the gauge when i turned the switch on.

i was also told to remove the fitting on the fuel filter while the truck was running and fuel should spray under pressure when it was crack. i completely remove the screw and the truck died and to restart we had to pirme the filter and crack 3 injectors.

is this a dead lift pump or is the gauge/sending unit screwed up.

thanks for the help,
dan howe

Yep, sounds like you killed the gauge.

Sounds like the lift pump is gone. I had the same exact thing when I installed the gauge and found I had no lift pump.

If you find the lift pump is ok, try grounding the sending unit by using a hose clamp and wire around the sending unit. Sometimes they don't ground properly.

Switching the ground should not be a problem.

When i installed mine it read zero pressure. I thought it was a bad sending unit. Turns out the LP was toast. Strange because the truck ran great. Put a new LP in and the guage shot up to 15 PSI. If i were you i would test the pressure with a mechanical guage.

Yes, glad you caught it. I don't know how long I had been running mine without a lp.

As a footnote: My new gauge started reading 0 after 5,000 miles. I thought oh no, not the lp again. Went by Cummins in Ft. Worth, and was told the pump is ok, the gauge isn't working. ($95 to just check the pump pressure.)

NEW LIFT PUMP TODAY. IT DOES HAVE MORE GO AT HIGHER RPMS THAN BEFORE. ONE GOOD QUESTION, WHY ISN'T THERE A FACTORY GAUGE/LIGHT TO TELL WHEN THE PUMP IS BAD TO PREVENT INJECTOR PUMP DAMAGE. IF I HAD LISTEN TO MY WIFE AND NOT PURCHASE THIS $75.00 GAUGE I SOON WOULD HAVE SPENT $$$$.

That would require Dodge to admit a design fault, publically.

They'd rather just replace lift pump and injector pumps under warranty for the next 5 years.
(2009 will be the expiry date for the 7 year warranty on the 2002's )

I did not realize that it was possible for these engines to run w/out the lift pump working. I just bought a 98 w/80k on it. I think I'm going to put a fp gauge on it and check my lift pump. Where is the best place to tap into? I've been reading on here about other brands of pumps. Which seem to work the best? Where can I get them? I've read about the FASS system and now the new belt driven unit. The FASS seems like a good idea, is it worth the $$. I am stock with only a K&N and a 4" exhaust. Any help/tips would be appreciated.

injection pumps are as bad as the lift pumps esspecially when you drove with zero fuel preasure for a while, and did you all know when dodge replaces your injection pumps they use remanufactured injection pumps and do not give you a new pump, kind of odd to get a rebuilt part put on your truck under warranty,i know this from experience,i just installed a new injection pump on my truck saturday just to find thedealer put a reman on mine when it was under warrany,i asked them today and they said thats what they always put on,my fist one went 2000 miles after my lift pump went, they will run for a while with no preasure, just over works the injection pump and wares it out

I'm not suprised they do the reman thing. They've been doing on the trans' for years. I've done IP's on the 12valves but never on the 24. What is involved with that? What part of Pa are you in?

Thanks, Steve.
