Ran Truck out of Fuel on the highway

Our Bonehead salesman ran out of fuel on the highway with our 24 valve trucks its a 99 auto. My question is he said it started smoking like crazy when it was dying could he have done any engine damage or would it just smoke cause its running out of fuel. I also am aware that he could have hurt the VP running it out of fuel.

From what I have learned on this site, he could have damaged the lift pump and the VP44. I reccomend having the fuel pressure checked.

Another word of advice that I have heard on this site, treat the 1/4 tank mark like it is the empty mark on your guage.

Could he have run out, got rescued with a couple gallons of gas, then saw smoke?

Rescued with gas? That might cause a few problems. IMHO you should fill er up and check FP then go from there. It isn't good by any means to run out of fuel but they should survive it.

Just wondering if he "conveniently" forgot when he actually noticed the smoke coming out, if he did attempt the wrong fuel.

Smoke wouldn't be too uncommon, especially if when the truck starting running out of fuel, he started giving it more pedal. Fill 'er up, bleed the system, fire the truck up, and you should be fine. The VP's aren't THAT fragile, although, if it was getting to be on it's last leg,, it coulda :-* ya goodbye.

Re:Ran Truck out of Fuel on the highway

That’s how I found out my fuel sending unit was crap. Cruising at about 75-80 MPH al of a sudden a huge WHITE puff of smoke, a little knocking and DEAD. Barely made it to the shoulder. Filled ‘er up bled the system and it fired right up. Since then just like jrs_dodge_diesel said, I treat ¼ tank as empty.
