power problems
I am hoping someone can help me. We just purchased a 2002 dodge ram diesel 2500. There are times it will take off & go & other times it has to fight to even go 40 mph. It does not matter if we have are loaded or running empty. We are also noticing a dead spot between 55 & 65 mph. We just got back from a short trip & the hills we could not pull 55 going there we pulled 70 & 75 coming back. I do not think it is a hill issue however because it acts the same on the straight away. RPM are adequate. Same weather conditions same tank of fuel. Unfortunately the truck did not come with an owner’s manual so hopefully someone can help me.

I think we figured out the problem after doing further research. We checked the codes (manual would of been helpful here).
We are coming up with codes p1693 & p216. If I am right we are having fuel injection pump problems. I will be calling the dealership tommorow. We have had the pickup 33 days & drove it 1300 miles. The warranty was 30 days or 1000 miles, of course....But we mentioned the problem to them shortly after buying the pickup & were told we needed to let it warm up some. This real angers me. I guess the good thing is that we purchased the extended warranty & if it is the fuel pump injector it is covered. I still feel like the dealership should take care of it.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks, Jim Higdon

- sounds like you have the classic Dead Pedal syndrome with the attendant Obituary Code for the VP44; Do you have any gauges installed (as you will see on this site REPEATEDLY, one needs to closely monitor the FP on the VP44 equipped trucks).
I hope your dealer has not accidentally misplaced the info that you had previously reported as an issue - if you've nothing to prove that the problem was noticed during the covered time frame, you may be hosed -depends on how good the dealer is, I suppose -
Good luck, and keep us posted!

Thanks Rauschbo, at this time we do not have any additional gauges on our truck. This is our 1st diesel truck & we have only had it 33 days. Please feel free to give us any ideas on fuel pressure gauges, transmission temp gauges etc. that might help us down the road. We will be searching this site as well for information on gauges.
I called the dealership this morning & spoke to the General Manager, real nice guy said to get the truck in there they would take care of us. We do have an extended warranty that covers the Vp 44. They had transferred me to the GM's cell phone so I had to call back to speak to the service department. They were nice but wanted to suggest that the p216 was a previous problem that had never been cleared. I really did not like the sound of that statement but we'll see.
They are giving us a loaner vehicle (looks like the the 5er is going no where this weekend uuuuhhhhh) & have committed to tow in if we break down on the 70 mile trip there.
We have kept track of our MPG & we were getting 14 on the pull & ended up on the return trip with 8. Running empty we were gettin 24mpg & that is now down to 17 mpg.

You can get guages from anywhere and many people have different opinions about them, here is a pic of mine @ night i got from www.Genosgarage.com

They are the New Dodge White Isspro guages i also have the trans temp mounted on top of the steering column.
Fill in your signature and location so we know what ya got and where your from. Chapter #33 gets together all the time to work on members trucks for free. Guages are easy just time consuming.

Update .. So far the dealership has been great...They were ready for us & gave us a choice of 3 different 05 loaner vehicles. Thank God the gut that checked us in said sounds like a injector pump to me & never ?? the check engine light coming on. We will know more Monday when they run a diagnostic test on it. Was happy to find out they are 1 of the top 5 Dym/Chry service centers in the nation. Sure hope this works in our favor.
Also not sure how to add info to our signature so until I can figure that out here is our info.

Just got back from picking up my Ram. I want everyone to know Parks Motor Inc In Augusta, Ks. has SUPERIOR SERVICE!!!!!
New transfer pump, new injection pump, other electrical switch problem fixed, fuel filter changed. Extended warranty & dealership (LET US TAKE CARE OF YOU!) left us with a $65.00 bill for the new fuel filter. These people are awesome I have never in my life had such great service. Above & beyond examples, we are warming up your vehicle for you, let us get the door for you, coffee, donuts, can we help you get your stuff out of the loaner vehicle. These people are on top of it before you even think about needing it. When we dropped the vehicle off it was pouring buckets of rain, the guys were soaking wet but the customers stayed dry. We will be driving the 70 miles for all our service needs & vehicle purchases. Now I am on my way to purchases gadges & towing mirrors. With my fantastic running Dodge Ram. Oh yeah almost forgot we probably had & little over 3/4 of a tank of fuel when we dropped it off it was full when we picked it up.
Thanks Jim

Great to hear of a dealer that actually cares and performs good service!
By the way with 97k on the truck it should be covered under to 100k engine warranty. When it was acting up did you notice any white smoke out of the tail pipe? Look in the 2nd gen 24 valve forum their is a survey there on injection pump failure be sure to enter your info for yours.
