Overheating and dont know why....Need Help!
Ok I brought my new truck home last night. Drove like a dream. Was about 1/2 mile from my house and punched it to see whet it would do. Got about 100 yards down the road and saw a bunch of white smoke, thought it was me burning the tires. So i stoped and looked and one of my Radiator hoses blew off ( the one that goes from the bottom of the radiator to the engine block). So i limped it a few yards into the drive and went to town to buy 4 gallons of coolent and a new hose clamp. So I thought it was fine and draove it to town today, pulled into the bank and it was leaking again, but only about a quart not too much. Re-tightened the clamp because it was a bit loose from me not trying hard enough last night. So i drive and everything is fine until I get about 3 miles from my house and the temp jump from about 160 to 240 and stays. I get out look for coolent agian, nothing. Limp it home and even turn on the heat to relieve some of the heat. Well the heater was blowing cold air.
I am not realy sure what is going on. I think it might be the Thermostat. The PO left a new one on the floor so I guees he was too lazy to replace it and was going to let me do it. Please tel me nothing bad is happening and what I can do to fix it. Need lots of help!

Is the radiator still full? What about the oil level - any coolant in the oil pan? Not to alarm you, but the fact that the radiator hose blew off when you punched it could be a blown head gasket pressuring up the cooling system. Job 1 to save your engine is to ensure that no oil is getting into the coolant or no coolant is getting into the oil.

Well I just checked the Radiator and it was low, put in a gallon and need about a 1/2 more. I think this might be the problem. I didnt think I spilt that much but I will get another gallona and run it down the raod and see how it stays. I did chek the oil and coolent. Oil looked fine, just like fresh from the can. Coolent looked good to. Looked into the coolent overflow and there was a bit of oily subsatnce on the top, not much at all. I dont think I have a blown gasket, its a copper one and can hold around 80 lbs+ and I only ran a short burst of maybe 40 so I doubt the gasket. Just to make sure is there any way i can test the coolent to see if there is oil in it? It might just be soot and grime in the overflow tank that I see. it realy doesnt look much like oil. I will try tonight to see if it overheats again.
I hope you're right.
It's easy enough to test the thermostat and radiator cap. You might want to do that to get them out of the equation while you're troubleshooting.
If you want to test oil for the presence of water, place a drop of oil on a hot griddle (or equivalent). If it sizzles and pops, there's water present.

Ok also i forgot to mention when i took off the cap there was a lot of pressure, I am guessing this is from the boiling coolent and heat. It might be blow-by but I am hoping not. This engine has less than 4k miles on it so I cant see anything failing now. Ill keep working on it.
You mentioned getting 4 gal. of coolant , are you mixing 50/50 and not more than 70% then adding to cooling system ?
If you mix more than 70% the coolant can behave just the opicent -gell up cold/ over heat .
Pull the thermostat and put into a pan on stove with thermomiter , to see if it opens at the rite temp.
If you are going to do your own work , buy a cooling system pressure tester , to check system twice a yr. and anytime that you do anything to the cooling system.

Its 50/50 premixed. Well I just took it for a stroll and I will have to say I think the head gasket is bad. That must be why the hose blew and it poped off the second time. Went around the block and came back no overheating this time but ipoped the hood to check things out and the hose is balooned up. Slowly relised the radiator cap and let the pressure out. I can now see an oily substance in the coolent and heated the oil and it only crackled when it got extremly hot. I dont understand how it could go. it is only 8 months old and was installed with the new engine. What i think might be the case is the head bolts need retorqued to specs. After breaking period it should be checked. A copper gasket can hold 80+ lbs so i know I didnt blow it cuz I maybe pulled 40lbs if I'm lucky. It has set for a few weeks and I drove it 140 miles home no problem. Any sugestions?

It could be that you've bought someone elses problum , what ever you do , do not let coolant stand in the oil , the coolant eats at the babit on the bearings , you should get an experanced tech do the tear down , it may be that the person that did the 1st one did not catch the problum - check for cracks , surface head , ding new HG putting back together ect.
