Oh no, Injector pump dead???
Hello everyone, my whole problem started out with a leak in my fuel return line by the tank. (It goes down hill from here....
) When I dropped the tank to replace the return line the fuel supply line must have got a crack in it!!! That gave me fits when I tried to bleed the lines, I got a lot of air and little spirts of fuel when bleeding. I tried to start the truck by cranking the heck out of it (didnt realize I was sucking air yet), probably cranked 8-10 times and
even sprayed it with starting fluid a few times.
I finally droped the tank again and replaced the fuel supply lines from the frame to the tank and the lines on the sending unit as well, (and took my Second bath in diesel for the day)
. With new lines on it I got a good bleed on it at the injector pump and it started right up. It starts great and idles great, but it looses power and has a miss to it. It lost power in the driveway and wouldnt hardly move, I put it in nuetral and pushed the pedal down and NOTHING, the RPM's climbed up real slow and it made a lot of white smoke and missed. Then it cleared up and ran great, but it lost power again going to and from work today with no pedal response and white smoke
. The lift pump is running, I dont know the fuel pressure, not sure how or where to check that. Please tell me I didnt ruin my injector pump. Also, if the injector pump is bad now is it something I can rebuild and fix? I work in a machine shop if i knew what to replace. Thanks for any advice!

bad vp!
Yep you have a bad vp44! Sorry to hear that. I got one from Blue Chip they were very good. IT is farrrrr better then the factory one. ( It almost makes mine run half diecent The best since it was new) I got a fuel pressure gauge and two senders for Genoges ( sorry the spelling is incorrect) I plumbed them in both sides of the two ports on the fuel filter this allows you to monitor both sides of the fuel filter 1 lb loss across the filter. I used low pressure hyd S/S lines. Double pole switch ( center return to the gauge from the switch each sender has a wire to the switch , senders have 12 Volts fed to them. I think that is the way I did it. It works wonderfully. Have the injectors checked at this time as well for they are probably bad or on there way out? The RV 275's give better milage then the 300's do. On my third VP. Pm me if if?
Do not replace parts with out testing to confirm bad .
Just because you can hear the pump run , does not mean that it is making the correct pressure .
Testing is by a direct reading , not conclusion .
I can not find my link , but one of the builders , had a write up for testing , I am getting soo many links , I need to get them organized .

Could I take one of the threaded plugs out of the top of my fuel filter and put a hose and a gauge on there to check lift pump pressure? Im hearing people say no less than 5psi at idle, what are the PSI's I should check for driving and under acceleration? (Still having trouble coping with the fact i may have toasted my VP...can cranking one over without steady fuel supply be enough to mess it up? )
HEY HEY!!! After laying in bed last night boiling about this d*** truck and VP problem i got up first thing this morning and put a fuel pressure gauge on the OUTPUT test port on my fuel filter and here are my readings: pre-start cycle is 11 psi, idle is 5psi, and the slightest engine rev the gauge drops off to 2psi and then less than 1psi!!! It misses and huffs white smoke when the pressure drops off. So, im off to the part store for a new filter. Is it possible I only need a $30 filter or $150 lift pump instead of a VP??? Someone please tell me I didnt take the readings in the wrong place, the wrong way or these are normal readings?!

Ok, I was checking from the filtered side, I replaced the filter which was pretty dirty, my Idle PSI came up to 8psi and cruising hangs around 5-6psi, however wide open throttle drops to 1 maybe 2 pounds! (Same psi readings on LP side) Safe to assume my lift pump is worn out causing these problems ive been having? Also, i bumped the key after I drove it for a while and warmed it up and nothing, no lift pump at all, is that normal for a warm engine? Thanks again everyone!
I do not think pressure should ever drop below about 7 psi , you should get that lift pump now , no more driving till new LP , thats what kills the VP , low pressure or no pressure from LP .
