Exclamation No oil pressure, HELP!

Hello all!
I have a 2001 Dodge 2500, 2wd short bed quad cab, auto.
The other day, my oil pressure went to 0. I pulled over and checked the oil, level was fine. Now, my guage reads evertyhing from 0 to maxed out, no matter what engine speed, or temp.
I did some searching on this board, and found a few threads concerning the oil sender, and I have some questions.
I tracked out a couple of part numbers, and the one I THINK I need is 4088390NX (Cummins part number) so I called the cummins dealer and got a quote for $82.00. But talking to the parts guy, he seemed like the part I need isnt a cummins part, but a Dodge part (goes from the ECM to the guages).
I dont have 82 bucks to spend on a part that may not work, but when I called the dodge dealer, they had no idea what I was talking about, and told me I needed a $190.00 part.
I checked the codes with the ignition switch and odometer and the only code that came up was 522.
I know I dont want the dealer to reflash ANYTHING, but I hate not knowing what my oil pressure is.
Can anyone help me? PLEASE?

unscrew the sender give the eng. a bump or hook up a mech guage to verify the problem............then you will know. ( It no doubt is the sender-do not do the reflash one!!!!!!)

Take yer truck down to the Cummins dealer so you can compare the new sender while its in yer hand before you buy, if it has the same electrical connector on the end than buy it.

Cheers, Kevin

Hi Thumper and Whitmore..
Thanks for the quick responses. It sounds like you are pretty sure that its the sender (the one that screws in the block).
I'll go down there Tuesday and pick it up. What threw me was the parts guy at Cummins kept talking about 2 senders and one was a Cummins part and one was a Dodge part and he was sure the Cummins part was working fine.
I trust you guys more than a parts puller.
Thanks for the info, and I'll let yall know how it turns out!

I had my oil pressure sender go bad about 6 months ago. Talked to the service writer at the dealership and asked him to look up part to see if was covered under 5/100. He said yes, i went back talked to the diesel mechanic asked him not to reflash computer so he just installed the sender. The oil pressure senders have differant electrical connections depending upon application.

The oil sender was covered under the 100K warrenty?
So the dealer changed the sender and didnt reflash the computer, and this was no cost to you?
How is your pressure reading now?
This would be awesome if I could get it repaired under waranty!
My sender has the female plug with 2 wires.

Thanks for the help guys!!

The Dealer said the oil sender was covered under the engine warrenty. I did not have to pay anything, but saw the paperwork where the sender cost about $200. Oil pressure guage has been working since the change. I went in and talked to the service writer and told him i think my oil pressure sender was bad(guage reads zero constantly with a check guages light on) and asked him to look it up to see if was covered under warrenty. I told him if it wasn't covered i was going to cummins and change it myself. About the reflash: they go by build date, the tsb lists the dates(from/to). My trucks number was prior to the reflash. But do not get the reflash because it suppose to keep it from dropping to zero pressure.

Well, went to the dealer today....
He told me that there is nothing wrong with my sender, its working fine. He also told me that it either puts out 5 or 10 volts, nothing in between. So he said the only way to make it work is to reflash.
Im confused as all hell now......

One of two things can go wrong here. Most likely the sender went bad and replacing it would restore your gauge. Second scenario is that if you replace the sender and the gauge still goes whacko (yes, this can happen) you will need the flash to correct the prob.

The reflash is a bad deal.

All they do is program the computer differently.

For example, 0PSI = 5 volts, and 50PSI = 10 volts.

When the ECM "see's" 5 volts, it just puts the gauge on the dash to 40PSI, to make it look like you have oil pressure.

If the sender is putting out more than 5 volts, then it reads the correct pressure.

In other words, if you loose oil pressure, your "reflashed" computer will not tell you. You could be driving with 0 oil pressure, and your "gauge" will still say 40PSI.

As fasr as the sender sending ONLY 5 or 10 volts, that's B.S. !!

At 10 volts your ECM will set codes indicating excessive voltage, and sensor out of range .

Most sensors run around 5volts.

The Cummins part # will fit your truck. Not much is changed from the industrial version motor, to the actual motor that is in our trucks.

Map, IAT, Oil pressure, Cam, or Crankshaft sensors are all official Cummins Part #'s.

Our ECM is only moderatly different. Not different enough to require different sensors.

Dodge get's the parts from Cummins, stocks them in their own warehouse, and marks up the price near 100%.

just go to cummins and get a unit that looks like yours! period! Tell them to skip the CPL crap and get a sender, or you will end up wth a guage that is more of a idiot lite..

Find a new dealer, while you're at it! I took mine in, and they replaced the sender, under warranty, and all is right now.

It was quite a shock when the bell rang, I look down and see the check engine light, and then notice oil pressure on the 0psi peg. You too, I expect.

Sorry you could not get it replaced at the dealer. But let us know if you change the sender and it fixes the problem.
