Re:LOW FUEL ECONOMY

Hi all, I have a 99' CTD auto quad cab 4x4, nothing done but afe air cleaner and silencer ring came up missing, anyhow, I get 15mpg on the highway empty! and 10 in town empty, whats up with this rig, i got better mileage out of my old gasser than this new diesel! its got 115K on it now, whats killing the mileage? Also, on my way home from work it got stuck in 4th or o.d. and stalled the truck when i had to stop, when i started it back up it was stuck in 1st, and still is, > ??? > ???what kind of sensor of comp glitch is causing this headache!!! Thanks, hope to hear from you all.

Re:LOW FUEL ECONOMY

Bad Habit, your best fuel economy is usually around 2000 RPM.
If you run at 70+ MPH you have to remember that the Ram is about as aerodynamic as a brick, so the faster you go, the worse your milage.

Try a road trip and keep the engine at low boost and 2000 rpm. You'll find your milage may improve.

Re:LOW FUEL ECONOMY

If IAT sensor is clean, check the ect sensor resistance. It is located behind the fuel filter, on the drivers side. I regularly haul a 10k lb trailer and 20k lbs of cargo. I get 12.4 with the trailer empty and 10.8 to 11.2 loaded (depends on how much rpm's and boost I go for.) Without trailer I get about 18. I replaced my IAT and ECT sensors one day when my mileage went south.

Re:LOW FUEL ECONOMY

Sorry to show my ignorance, but what are the IAT and ECT sensors and how do they impact fuel economy? ???

Re:LOW FUEL ECONOMY

This may not help ya, but its worth a try...

WOT in park really does not show much, and it surprises me that it drops 3psi. There just is not much of a load on it til you are in gear and pushing 7000+ lbs.
Try a "on-the-road" test at WOT. Just route the gauge from under your hood and underneath the windshield wiper, or tape it to the window.

Other things to try.
Fuel filter?
Boost hose clamps?
Condition of hoses?
Boost leaks around airhorn and intercooler?

If you have gauges, keep the boost at or below 6-8psi, and the EGTs at or below 6-700, and the rpms at about 200-2100. This should net you the best mileage. The comment about the aerodynamics of a brick is pretty much it!
