Low power poor economy, getting worse.
Low power poor economy, getting worse.
I tried this once before and did not get much response, but the condition is getting worse. I am not sure where to go for assistance. My truck always had great power and good economy. The last couple of months the power is getting lower, and now the economy has taken a dive. It starts great, does not smoke, does not miss or have idle problems. It runs up to the max rpm only takes longer. It is not using oil or any other signs of problems. The fuel pressure is good, over 10 wot. Temperature is normal. Turbo looks good, no oil or looseness. Had the codes checked, no codes. Only new thing it is doing is the ABS lights come on every so often, go off when shut down. Speedo is normal, front brakes are fine. The rest is in my signature. Where do I start? Am I getting ready to lose the injection pump? Any help or suggestions would be helpful.

Might go by a trustfull dealer let them go ahead and put the computer on it. Just to see of there are any ECM codes set. The ABS light might be your speed sensor in the differential.

I just replaced my output sensor in the tranny yesterday.

Good luck!

After you check the clamps, Haulin' consider the air filter. Do you have a boost gauge? I thought you did, but I may be remembering wrong.

Are your EGTs comiing up?

My 12v had similar problemms, and it was poor fuel.
good luck
Yeah checked my intake system, installed a clean filter in the Scotty II, all connections tight, recently cleaned the IAT, but will pull it again. Don't yet have the egt and boost hooked up. Dash is still apart, always something like this higher on the priority list
Had an OBDII hooked up and no codes. I doubt the rear sensor is bad, the speedo is normal and I am currently changing the rear lube and will clean the connections and the sensor. I hate it but maybe the dealer deal with the computer is the way to go, but with no codes, don't know.

There's info floating around here somewhere on how to make a pressure testing setup from common hardware store pieces, you might have a crack in the intercooler or a bad boot that wouldn't be immediately obvious without a pressure test of the whole intake system.

Well this weekend I have to go from Georgia to Indianapolis so that will answer any fuel question, and I think I solved the ABS problem, time will tell. One of the rear brakes had backed off completely, is now adjusted properly. If it does it again I will have to tear it down to find out why. Spent several hours on general maintenance, cleaned the IAT, let it sit over night with the bat unhooked, reset the APPS, it does feel better today, we will see. Could not get the 140 weight gear lube so had to put Valvoline syn 90 weight in it.

Valve adjust?

I know the 24 vavle engines dont need the vavles adjusted as often as the 12 valve engines, but with 200,000+ miles on your truck... maybe?

Rich.

Ok now I have some information, 2000 miles later. The ABS is sparadic and sometimes stays on for long periods. Finally it made the speedometer act up so it is the speed sensor. Today I talked long with the service manager at the local Dodge dealer. He gave me some good info. The last time I changed the speed sensor I noticed an increase in performance. I asked about that and he said that it "can" cause bad readings to the computer on speed and affect the fuel delivery. He also said that hooking it to the computer would not do any more in this case than the OBDII did, which showed no codes.

I would really like to find some publication that discribes the different signals that the ECM will use to affect performance. Seems that several seemingly unassociated signals cause a limp mode or at least a loss of performance.

This is just a shot in the dark but what about the Boost/Map sensor? I also have a 99 and it's been through 3 Boost/Map sensors. All do to a poor K&N filter but the truck will really run like crap and the milage will also suffer if the engine isn't seeing full boost.

You can buy a new sensor through Cummins or you can go to TST's website they sell them for about half the price. 8)

Here's a Link that will help with the sensor. Or if you want I've got the part # out it the truck if you want to go to Cummins.

DB

Re:Low power poor economy, getting worse.
Last post on this overworked subject... The problem was the rear speed sensor. Replaced it and after 1500 miles, the problem is gone, truck is back to normal. Ya'll should remember that I went about three weeks of steady driving before the sensor problem showed up while the power and efficiency was going down. As the dealer rep said, it "can" cause a limp mode type of problem. I am back to 11.5 to 12 mpg pulling 28,000 or so gross and passing big trucks on the hills. Now for these injectors that just got delivere
