Lift pump troubleshooting.

Hey guys I know this one has been beat into the ground but I have searched and read up and I am unclear on a few things. My truck ran low on fuel a week ago and started RPM surging and stalling. I stopped at a buddies and and added 5 gallons of red dye (shhh dont tell anyone) fuel and made it home. The problem got progressivley worse until the motor would just crank continuously.I thought it was possible water in fuel and flushed it until I started getting red fuel out the fuel filter drain or blow off (whatever its called). No luck. The filter was 30,000 miles old so I changed and still no luck but now when I turn the key on I get a flashing through the ignition like the the lift pump is cycling on and off . I tried to do a code check like Madhats demo vid but I dont have a digital read out under the tach. I dont have any way to read the code and I cant really afford an airdog and a smarty right now but I hate spending money on something less than Ideal just to be replaced with what I want down the road. I do have an old bronco I could drive around a while while I save but any thoughts or ideas on the situation would be appreciated. Phil PS my truck is a 06 QQ BH 3500 SRW 4x4 6spd with no mods and just turned 40,000 on odo

If it is an 06, the error codes will read out in the digital odometer section (also has PRND21). If it is way older, and doesn't have a digital readout, could the flashes of the check engine light. This should get you started anyway...

You need a fuel pressure gauge to test the LP.

Thanx for the response guys. My truck is an 06 6spd so no prnd21 and I only get an odometer rerading under the speedo. Under the Tach is blank. I do notice the engine light blinking. Any ideas on where I can find some info on codereading and doing a pressure test on the LP? Thanx Phil

For a code reader you can do the key trick. All you do is start with the key in the off position & turn it to on then off three times. On the thrid time leave it in the On position. The odometer will read the P-codes. Then you can look here on DTR to the ON-LINE STORE. On the left hand side is Computer Fault Codes. That will tell you what the issue is.

The only way to check the lift pump is with a pressure gauge & check the flow amount.

For 40,000 miles, isn't it under warranty?

I guess it may be under Cummins warranty still but dodge warranty ran out at 36K. Hopin I can just fix it and avoid the drama. When I do the code check with the key I just get a consistantly flashing check engine light. I also here a constant tick/knock from what looks like a starter selenoid on the passenger fender well. I went through every fuse and nothing. If I crank it for an extended period of time it acts like it wants to fire and I start to get a bunch of smoke. Pulled the the fuel filter and tried priming the housing with a cup of diesel and nothing. Anyone could it have something to do the grid heater? I am tempted to grab a can of ether. Phil

lift pump

i changed my fuel filter on my 03 cummins last week and ran fine next day i heard the noise your talking about on my pass side fender, then my truck dies on way to dr appt,i let some fuel out the **** valve on fuel filter housing and she started and ran all day and next no probs then 2 day later im leaving the house and my truck dies again on me, this time the fuel filter deal didnt work ,i called a local diesel co and asked what i could do myself on the side of the road, they told me too open the **** valve on the fuel filter and bump the key and look to see if the fuel was comming out the hose under the truck, under 5 or so psi, it was at first then no more fuel.. he said it was my lift pump cause i wasnt getting fuel to the fuel filter,,so i went home and looked on ebay for a lift pump found a fass for 195 new so i got it,now im gonna put that on tomarrow, ill let ya know how it works, but whats funny is you said that noise on the pass fender, well the thing that is running on my truck is the cruise control motor, does someone know if these two thing are conected in the same circut or does one go out before the other???????????? i have no idea but the cruise control dont work since the lift pump went out.any thoughts would be great, not trying to hijack your thread just thought since your having the same probs we can both get some answers

lift pump

thats a good ?, southerpride, you would think that if the cc motor is running the relay would be good,i got a code on my truck about the relay, and i called the local diesel place and he told me that if the lp is bad the circut in the lp would be broke,so i bought the lp and thats myplans to put it on today, ill let you know how it goes.
