Lift Pump Help

My 99 is in the shop with lift pump trouble. Problem is the shop doesn't seem to know that if it is running under 8 psi at wot it is dying. Mine is running only 2-4 at wot and 8 at idle. I need to know where to tell them to call so they will replace it under warranty so it doesn't strand me again with a dead lift pump.

Re:Lift Pump Help

Ultimately you want on from Cummins direct, I beleive Dodge will probably use the factory pump from Cummins anyway so not to worry...on another note, make sure your fuel filter is fresh too, this will also cause weak pressures. If it hasn't been done in a while, do it, this will strain the lift pump and drop pressures too.

Re:Lift Pump Help

Like Barracuda said...get it from Cummins preferably so you don't pay double for it. Call the closest Cummins outlet and have your engine serial number ready as well as your truck VIN.

Re:Lift Pump Help

It is in a Dodge dealership now, my problem is the dealership says since it is running they won't replace it. What I need to know is where to have the dealership call so they will replace a failing pump under warranty, not wait untill it completly dies and strands me once again far from home.

Re:Lift Pump Help

your not alone on that one unfortunately, "acceptable" pressures are low....i would remind them that if it causes the injection pump to go due to low pressures that repair is 20x more expensive....you can get one for yourself from Cummins for around $150- and their easy to install....if your at the end of your warranty you may want to consider, if it weakens your inj. pump and it dies after your warranty is up you won't be a happy customer...

Re:Lift Pump Help

Barracuda thats what I told them this morning, plus the fact that I was going on a long trip hauling a horse trailer and did not want it to break down while hauling horses,it gets expensive towing horse trailers with a tow truck. At least the guy is now calling Dodge trying to find a solution for me. This is not the first time one has died on me so at least I am a little more prepared to deal with them than last time.

Re:Lift Pump Help

You should really invest in two gauges...a pyrometer and a fuel pressure gauge, especially since you tow alot. You can buy both gauges and a pillar mount for about $200. then you can monitor your fuel pressure so you dont chance anything.and remember, keep a clean filter in it, good luck

Re:Lift Pump Help

I already have both gauges, thats how I knew the pressure was dropping, last week it was 9-10 at wot now it is down to 2-4 wot and swinging from 12 to 5-6 at idle,I changed the filter and it didn't help a bit. Hopefully the dealer will do the right thing if not I'll just put a new one in myself.

Re:Lift Pump Help

I went through the same thing when I noticed my fuel pres dropping. I went round and round with the dealer where I purchased the truck and the service manager was no help at all and finally told me it was not covered under the 5 year/100k warranty. > I decided to try one more dealer who was 50 miles away. I drove in,,, explained my problem to the female Service Advisor who agreed that it sounded like the lift pump,,,, it took her 5 minutes to punch my VIN into the computer and tell me it was covered and they would replace it if it tested deffective. The Diesel Tech tested it and said it was on its way south,,, barely 10psi @ idle and 4-5psi @ WOT.
If you still have the 5/100k warranty left,,, I would try another dealership. If you don't want the hassel,,,, buy one from Cummins and put it on yourself as the other guys have said. It's not that hard of a job.

BTW,,,,, Starr Motors in Suffolk VA is where I will buy my next truck. They are Top-Notch in my book! ;D

Re:Lift Pump Help

After seeing mine replaced over night I agree with RATTLINRAM and replace it yourself. If you still qualify for a warranty, try taking it to the dealer after to see if they will honor it. I know that is what I am going to do.. If they refund me great!! If not no skin off my back, but I know my truck is running again and that proper preventative maintenance was done.

It is absolutely amazing to me how a dealer is willing to lose a customer for the price of something like a lift pump - especially under warranty. :- :-

Re:Lift Pump Help

Hey, at least ya'll have a dealer that knows what a lift pump is. It may not seem like much, but it's a long way from where I'm standing! (My dealer = :-)

Re:Lift Pump Help

CLICK HERE for information that may help you find a good dealer near you or to give your opinion on a dealership experience (good or bad). Please take the time to read Dave's message on that page. I posted my experiences at both dealerships on that survey in hopes of helping someone else in the future.
Thanks to Dave Fritz for this service.
