Is it the lift pump?

Hi guys. Took a trip this weekend and my truck started to miss a little when i took off from a stop. Later it was acting up at higher speed, around 70 or so, 2000 or 2100 rpm's. As long as it wasn't under a load it ran decent. It seemed to shudder and run rough, if i mashed the pedal to much.
The lift pump: Supposed to make a buzzing sound right? I remeber hearing it buzz before, for like 2 to 5 sec's then stop.
This morning turned on ignition and it made a fizzle like sound,
no buzz. If the fuel filter needed changed, the pump would still make it's buzzin sound right? I opened the drain on the filter and let some fuel outta it, and the lift pump made hardly any sound at all- to a fizzle sound. Had a really hard time getting the truck to start after draining a little fuel.
Could there be a wireing relay or control module messed up or is that just the way the lift pump goes south?
The injector pump or vp44 i guess, at certain rpm's can you guys hear yours tickin or clickin along? usually not under much of a load when i hear it.
Thanks for any input.

First off, you need a fuel pressure guage to see what's really goin' on.
But the trouble you describe sounds like a typical Lift Pump gone Tango Uniform to me.
Should be warranteed at the dealer if under 100,000 miles, or about $150 from Cummins and DIY so you know it's done right.

Ed

When you talk about the 100,000k warranty, does it matter if your the 3rd or 4th owner of the truck? Me thinks i be the third.

I think if you are the 3rd owner of a truck you are out of luck when it comes to the 100,000k warranty.
Adam
Re:Is it the lift pump?

The 100,000 mile warranty should be on the Cummins regardless of how many owners.

If it was up to me, I'd buy my own pump and change it myself to avoid the hassles. (I replaced my own at 36,000 miles)

Re:Is it the lift pump?

Thanks for the advice guys. I called a dealship, and the service guy said he'd look up my vin # to see if it was still under warranty, but his computer was messin up so he couldn't get much info. He thought the cummins warranty would still be good though too. I was thinkin the same thing about getting my own pump and just changeing it myself. I just hope the injector pump wasn't hurt by insuficent fuel.
Thanks again.
Later.
