Lift Pump??

Ive had a ticking noise coming from the driver side of my truck for a while now and thought it was a small exhaust leak but today i was checking the tranny fluid and decided to crawl under my truck and check things out.. the ticking is coming from the line closest to the wiring harness out of the top of the fuel tank... i can feel the line pulsing in my hand.. my truck has not lost any perfromance that i can tell... what is this?

The 97 has a mechanical transfer pump located on the driver's side of the block about midway to the back of the engine. It is the little guy with the plunger sticking out under a rubber button that you have to jack around with forever when you change filters.

Reach down and feel that pump as the truck idles. If the pump is hammering with any loud noise then it is likely time for a replacement. They normally will make a slight noise, but not really any clicking as they run.
