Installing a VP44
Installing a VP44
I have me a new rebuilt IP and the local places all want $300 for an install. I know I saw a write up on how to do it. Can someone throw up that link for me? Is this a task I should go at or should I let a mechanic do the job? Any input on the install would be great.
I don't remember where the write up is, but maybe I can help. After doing it myself, I would never consider letting the dealer near my truck again. They wanted to charge me an outrageous amount.
This is what I remmeber:
Remove the fuel filter and housing.
remove the intake horn and grid heaters.
Remove injector lines in two sets of three.
Remove all fuel lines from VP44.
Remove the timing gear cover.
Make sure the keyway is at 12 o'clock.
Remove the gear from the pump with a steering wheel puller and the long bolts from the intake horn.
Unbolt the pump from the timing case and engine mounting points.
Pull the VP44 out of the timing cover. DO NOT DROP THE KEY INTO THE CASE.
Loctite the new key into the new pump. put the shaft into position so the key is aligned with the timing gear. The alignment of the key and gear is a PITA. just don't move the gear.
Slide the VP44 +shaft+key into the timing gear.
Mount the vp44 to case, then to engine mounting points.
Tighten the gear nut. (i forget the torque)
install the fuel lines.
The fun part, reinstall injector lines. #6 was really tough for me.
Reinstall fuel filter housing, grid heater, and intake.
Bleed the fuel system.

I purchased mine from USdieselparts.com for around $1500 and they refund around $400 when you send in your old pump as a core charge. Just about everywhere I looked had about the same price once the core was added in. Thanks for all the pointers that will help a ton.
Best to have a factory service manual but these instructions will give you a good idea. It's not that hard.
