I think Im screwed !!! Tranny Grenaded !!

I own a 1999 Dodge ram Dually Diesel 4x4 4dr. Coming threw Wolf Point Montana, it refused to shift into Overdrive, about 15 minutes after that the engine revved up to 3500 RPM and the truck stopped pulling. I got out and looked underneath and the entire underside of the truck and the white boat I was pulling were covered in tranny fluid. The boat is a 16 foot fibreglass seadoo, weighs about 700 pounds.

I just spent 900.00 bucks last week to have the transmission taken apart to reseal the reverse band pivot pin, which was apparently causing the transmission to leak between the bellhousing and the part that bolts to it. The transmission grenades less then 4000 miles after they fixed this, should the transmission shop be held accountable?

Took it to the local dodge dealer in Middle-Of-Nowhere Montana and they told me the transmission was destroyed. I got a quote of $2740.00 + tax (CAN) to have my transmission rebuilt with a bigger torque converter. Is this a good price ??

Any ideas what could have caused this?? It has an aftermarket transmission in it apparently...could the case be crap ?? After having it towed to Lethbridge Alberta, over 600 miles, Im rather unhappy with my newly purchased Dodge. Hopefully this is then of my troubles with my giant white <edit>.

Thanks for any help.

You towed it 600 miles? Hope it was a buddy and not the wrecker service... I'd hate to see that bill

Have you tried refilling the tranny and driving it?
Of course the dealer wants to put a new/rebuilt one in!

Don't be too hard on your newly purchased '99 - the aftermarket tranny, recent tranny shop, or previous owner are likely the cause of your misfortune.

Lack of fluid and kept driving. That usually equates to the underdrive clutches and steels going out and the intermediate shaft welding itself to the overdrive which can cause the OD to become non repairable. With an estimate of only 2700 most of the hard parts must have survived. If your trans starts "talking to you" again I bet you won't keep driving before you pull over and check things over.

I hope you have a 3K gov kit. Pulling a grade at 3500 rpms even with a 3K gov kit could cause more problems than just your tranny.....

Please fill out your signature so we know what we are working with.....

He's got a 1999 so it's a VP equipped truck. They rev to 3500 from the factory.

This is also a very bad idea with a Dana 80 (don't ask how I know! )

I would certainly be on the phone with the shop that did the work previously.
Just resealing the reverse pivot pin can be done without complete trans removal or disassembly.Remove OD section, drop pan and valvebody, push pin out to replace o-rings, reinstall assemblies removed, and your done.

Was the fluid leaking now in the eng/trans bellhousing area? could be front seal in that case. Leak at reverse pin normally is slow leak and leaks mostly after truck sits awhile.
Let us know how it works out. Might call DTT as they are in Canada as well.
