How much play is to much??

How much play is to much in my turbo? I am talking about up and down play.
I went from NH to Az and back and in Oklahoma the turbo started to whistle. I checked it and it had about 1/8" of play. I had to continue on so I did. The dealer just put this one on 3000 miles ago. They 3 day aired me another turbo and it has as much play as the one that is on the truck.
I always thought that the shaft should be tight (play measured in thousands of an inch). I can measure this one with a tape measure, and when it gets hot it gets looser. I also can not get my boost over 18 now. Are all of these turbo's that loose or do I have two bad ones?
Thanks
Eric

Up and down if you can't make it rub it will be OK. Any in and out play is bad.

Can you tell me what is up with all the whistling?? and the low boost?? I have 4" straight exhaust on this and the whistle is way louder than the exhaust.

Have you pressurized the system and checked for leaks? That's where I'd start.

Also an exhaust leak pre-turbo can make quite a squeal under load.

Now that I think about it I thought it sounded like it was coming from the drivers side. If I have a leak on the drivers side that would explain my noise and lack of boost. I will check it in the AM

I got around today to look for my leak. It is leaking at the head where the flat plate bolts on right below the pre-heater. The gaskets will be here in the morning. Does anyone know if I can do this job without removeing the injector lines?
