HELP....Tranny Problems......

Ok, we've got a 1999 CTD, 3500 service truck. When starting out from a stand still, it will not shift to 2nd unless the motor is reved to about 3100 to 3200 and then just lifted off the throttle and then it'll shift. Fuild level is OK and the fuild is a nice red color with no burning smells. Every else works ok after that. Will adjusting the bands help that? Is it time for a rebuild? BTW this is the original tranny with 185,000 miles on a completely stock truck.

Check the kickdown cable. A.K.A throttle valve cable. With the throttl closed and the kickdown cable unhooked, it should be VERY close to being line up to its detent on the throttle linkage. This is the easiest way I have found to check it. There is a button on the cable ( a few inches from the end at the throttle ) that can be pushed ( or pulled up, I can't remember for sure ) in to release it to be adjusted if it is not close. Also while it is unhooked, make srue it pulls all the way and springs back. If no problem found there, look under the truck at the transmission linkage and make sure they are tight on the trans. I have seen the shifter linkage come loos and make the kickdown linkage bind up.

thats exactly what mine did. you can change a few things . speed sensor. pressure sensor etc. they are pretty cheap. but that didnt fix the problem . it prolonged the inevitable. i finally after 18 months of screwing with mine. i got a new tranny. being a 1999 and probably having over 100,000 miles . its time to get a new one if its stock. lots of choices with upgraded valve bodies and torque converters to choose from.

hope this helps. and if you have more questions . ask them.
