help-tranny problems on the road

my husband is on the road 200 miles away from home. there is a loud knocking noise when he is in 6th gear. it runs fine in all other gears except 6th gear. he is currently running in 5th gear. Is there any suggestions or ideas of what could be wrong or anything he can do while on the road?

Where is he at. First thing I would do is check for code's. Is the check engine lite on. If not, cycle the key on and off 3 time's to see if there is a code.

Mine was what sounded like spark knocking real bad. Sounded like a broke rod. Tell him I said to check that wire to see if it's shorted out. Me and him talked about it.

there are no codes no MIL. It started with a light knock and now it is a hard knocking, still just in 6th gear. He is in Virginia.

Ask him if he checked the wire by the a/c compressor pressure line for a short.

it's not a miss, its just a hard knock coming from the transmission.

Does it do it while standing still. If not, might be a u-joint. I'm just throwing out wild guess's here. I'm sure more guy's will be chiming in soon.

He might have broke a gear or a sycronizer. Does it do it in reverse.

As long as there is no noise in any other gears, just do not use 6th until the transmission can be torn down. It is a good idea to reach under and feel the transmission and make sure it is not too hot to lay his hand on. If the transmission is hot, then he may have a low oil problem, and that will need to be addressed before he goes much farther in any gear. He more than likely has a chipped tooth or broken bearing in the 6 gear race, and the knock occurs every time it rolls around. The latter is by no means an unusual problem for trucks that pull heavy trailers.

let me know

Well if he ends up getting stuck and he is in the central va area you can tell him to call me and I'll come pick him up. If need be I'll trailer his rig back here. I'm located in Dinwiddie, Va. zip 23833 located close to interstate 85 and not too far from 95. 804-6914349. Hope everything turns out ok. Chris

Glad to see you made it home ok. I sure didn't think a 6 speed would break down. I guess even a poor old Dodge can give it up when you work em as hard as we do hauling those car's.

I love my truck, but in the past 6 weeks my truck has been in the shop for about half that time, and that means $$$$$ down the drain, that sucks
