Help!!! Power problems at topend
Ok to start 2001 3500 4x4 ctd auto 3.54gear 107000 miles 7000 since new motor and trans . Ok I had a small leak so the dealer replaced the motor and just before rebuilt the trans . Since the first time it went to the dealer I complained about loss of power so first time (trans ) they said the trans must have been it then 2nd time motor , dealer said must have been that . Then lift pump, then injection pump. Still loss of power at hwy speeds 70+ with trailer . The loss of power came on slow so I cant pin point when around 70000mi. I think .My truck runs great with no trailer but with it feels like I'm towing 3 times the weight .I normally tow a bobcat on a 20ft gooseneck .I used to be able to go as fast as I wanted (safely) 90mph even but now I have a hard time doing 70 +or- . I am also getting bad fuel mileage . It Is also the same with or with out power puck or edge ez (I thought the puck went bad so I got a Edge comp but didnt tap the pump yet I will after the dealer warrenty work is done) Although I'm over the 100000mile mark, its a problem the dealer has not fixed so they will still cover it .I have egt boost and trans guages boost with out chip is 20 ish with chip and turnbuckle its 30ish the egts are great 1000 or less . I cant figure out what is wrong and the dealer cant either . I plan to do more upgrades like a FAST system and cool down timer and trans upgrades but no more power upgrades . It seems like it strugles at high speeds now and it didnt used to . I think the only thing they havent replaced is the turbo. By the way is there a spec. on turbo shaft side play, the slack ? I have some but I dont know if it is too much .
I have had my truck in the dealer 9 times since Thanksgiving .I am setting up a meeting with the Service Manager and the General Manager of the dealer to give them an earfull .
Thanks to any one that can help .

I do not see your fuel pressure readings at idle and at cranking. Without that information one would just be guessing in the blind. It would also be good ides to get a scan of your OBDIII codes, and look for those related to the IAT, MAP, CKT, and ECT sensors.
However if the dealer is reading the codes as they search for the problems I would be looking at the injection pump. The 2001 is still in the run that used the defective VP44's, before Bosch did the upgrades, and they all will fail when the rig is pushed to use all its horses unless you have added an air separation system and good prepump similar to the FASS dual filter system before the engine was subjected to hard use.
You may want to read this: http://www.bluechipdiesel.com/inject...pfailures.html
The short of the bluechip story is that chips do not cause pumps to fail, but all pumps that have been run behind chips do fail! Go figure that logic!

I'v been fighting this same problem for a year now with no codes being shown when scanned. I'v cleaned, replaced and reset to death with no luck. My last step is to pull what seems to be a perfectly good IP and replace it. My fuel pressure on the outgoing side of the filter is always above 12# no matter what, but when I pull trailers I suckup fuel and have to lay on it to climb any grade at all. If you find an answer PLEASE make it public. There are a couple of TSB's out there on this issue that I haven't tried yet, I hate going to the dealer for anything.
I dont have a fuel pressure guage yet. But it used to run great . They replaced my motor because of a casting flaw . It was leaking coolant . It has a new vp44 on it and lift pump but it did not help . It runs better overall but still the loss at higher speeds .

Ok I have a fuel pressure guage hooked up to the valve on the side of the fuel filter and I have 15psi idle and 12psi driving and the lowest I could get it was 8 psi full throtle . I will hook up my trailer later today and see what it is under load .

Ok under load the lowest I got it was 10 psi .So my fuel pressure is ok . Is there something else it could be ? Driving with edge on #1 setting , EGT's 1000deg. pre turbo , boost 30-32 lbs .

Was at a wrench day a few weeks ago, guy was complaining about the same loss of power, he also had a 2001 with auto. His problem turned out to be his turbo, the housing was cracked, impossible to see from the outside, but once the turbo was off of his truck, was plain to see. Someone had a spare, and when they went to put that one on, inspecting it showed a crack in the same location. I loaned him my HY that I had taken off to put on a PDR HX35 hybrid. Spoke with him the next day, said his power was back and the truck ran like it did new.
You might want to have them check out your turbo, could be cracked.

I'm a non so bear with me here. If the turbo was cracked to that extent would it be able to go to 28 pounds of boost to open the waste gate or would that allow enough pressure to escape to keep that from happening.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge of turbos can chime in, and explain about cracked turbo housings and the problems they cause.

your numbers are in the range, egts a bit low, but to get that kind of boost you must be getting fuel, it sounds like you can rule the eng/trans out for now, so how is the exhaust? intake? and did you get any codes? my truck had a fuel level float desolve and plug the pickup screen pretty good, has anyone looked in the tank? it might be worth trying a different ecm to see if it a computer glitch....darn mystery problems
I cleaned those sensors . I have a 4in turbo back exhaust . k&n filter . The dealer said no codes came up .
Where was that turbo cracked ? I want to take mine off to see if its cracked .
Thanks for everyones replys,
Mike
