hard starts, won't run
hard starts, won't run
the last two winters i only plugged truck in when i wanted instant heat. Now if i don't plug it in i have to crank it and it stumbles for awhile then clears up after a bunch of white and alittle black smoke. This morning i forgot to plug it in.(its 14 degrees today) I cranked and cranked cycling the grids a few times. Nothing! just a cloud of white smoke with some black. I never had this problem untill a few months ago. post you opinons on how to fix and what is wrong.
thanks

Mike,
Welcome to the site. There is tons of good information of this site whether your just want a daily drive or a pulling machine. Like Dr. Evil said it is hard to help you without knowing what year truck you have. Some possible problems could be the grid heater not working because the relays are bad, if it is a 24v you could have a dead lift pump or injector pump. But there are many other things it could be. If you give us soem information about your truck by filling out your sig we could start helping you. To fill your sig go under User CP in the top tool bar and click on sig. Let us know what year year and if there are any mods.

i have 15psi at idle
after doing some searching i think its the grid heaters or relay for them. Question, when i go to start in the morning shouldn't i see a draw on my gauge when the grids are working?? (key on) when i plug he truck in it starts right up, after work it is hard to start again.
next question is this a hard fix? and is there just one relay? Hell i probabaly should just buy a repair manual. where can i get one that is good???

My truck does that with low battery voltage.
If your voltmeter is not atleast 1.5 needle widths over the bottom of safe with KOEO (key on, engine off), then your batteries are too low.
It's very possible to have a motor that cranks, but not fast enough to fire off.
Piston speed has to be fairly high when cranking in cold weather so that the piston can compress, and heat the air enough to ignite the fuel. If the motor turns to slow, the IP cannot build enough pressure, the ECM cannot recognize Cam sensor inputs, and cylinder temps are too low, even with the grids.
