Starts but won't run
Can anyone give me some ideas about what to check on my 96 2500 diesel?
Engine runs perfect but every so often it will start but not stay running when key is released to the on position.I have replaced the ignition switch and that did not fix it.Only seams to do this when the engine is warm.It will run for as long as you hold it on start, some times it stays running when I release the key to the run position and sometimes it does'nt.Seems to be getting worse.
Found the problem!!!!!!!!!! Clip fell off the linkage and solinoid rod was binding up on the end of the pin.Put on new clip and it works like new! THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP!!!

Take a look at the fusible links that go from the drivers side battery to the shutdown solenoid.
You can also check the solenoid with a helper- just watch the rod jump up when you start and see whether it goes down to the stop position as soon as the key is released. (It should hold the start position)

also check to see if your solenoid is adjusted properly, i forget the specs right off hand, but i remember that when i adjusted mine, i made a template out of a good chunk of card board to use as a reference
also, what about the ignition cylinder? i guess that shouldnt make a big difference as long as the truck starts, it should stay running.... but how did the "teeth" look on that? they werent worn out, or rounded were they?

Slow down here boys , next time it starts and shuts off , leave the key in the on position, get out and look at the solonoid , see if you can lift it up any farther.
The solonoid has 2 coils , pull and hold , it pulls the lever up when you turn the key to start , and holds it with the key at on. Check and see if you have voltage with the key in the on position the next time it does this (there is only 3 wires on the solonoid, one should have power.)
