fuel pump died
fuel pump died
well, the 2000 wouldnt restart today after a 40 mile drive. we had it towed to the local cummins bridgeway dealer where they quickly diagnosed it as fuel pump failure. their quote is $2,700. to fix which gets a new vp44 installed and a new lift pump. my searches found info on there being a ?? year/100,000 mile warranty on this problem. does this pertain to all pumps with under a 100,000 miles? whether you are the original owner or not? if so, it may save us 2700 bucks. does anyone have this info? otherwise, is $2,700 a good price? or, is it the norm.
Frank....first, both the LP and the VP-44 are most definitely covered by the 5 year 100k warranty. Dont let ANY dealer tell you they are not. If thats what they are telling you - they need to get their act together.
Second, those prices are beyond ridiculous !! The LP can be bought at Cummins for around $150 and a rebuilt VP can be bought for $900-1200....and while I havent changed them myself....its not supposed to be that bad of a job if you know which end of the wrench to use. Looks to me like their labour rate is AWFUL steep.
Good luck.

The warranty starts with the in-service date, so depending on when the truck was sold, it's possible you could be out of warranty, but check the dates first! The price seems a little high, but depends on cost for towing, diagnosis, etc. and would be for a new injection pump not reman. Personally at this point I would get a FASS system put on and make sure it really needs a VP before spending the money, if it's bad there should be some trouble codes relating to it, get that info from the dealer. Warranty doesn't matter who bought it new, it's on the truck, not the owner.
o shiDD!!! i hope i didnt just swallow a big one!! its at cummins getting repaired because with my 12 valver, i found that my dealer isnt good in any way with a cummins powered vehicle. will that warranty still be in place since cummins is actually doing the repair?/?
ok , heres the latest. when i saw on here that it may be warranty covered, i called cummins immediately. the daytime service manager informed me that if i would have taken it to dodge, it would have been covered in full under the 5/100,000 warranty. i had to hold back from reaching through the phone and grabbing his neck! i calmly asked him why the night time service manager wouldnt have recommended this or why he didnt explain that little detail- he obviously couldnt answer for the ''other guy'' but, agreed that he should have told me this. i had such a negative experience with my dodge dealer the last time with my 12 valve that i vowed to never use another dealer again (also after never really having any good experiences with any vehicle at any dealer i have used in the past in this area). so, i figured from now on, id take it to only cummins for all engine related services that i couldnt diagnose or fix at home. they said i could ''try'' to get reimbursed from d/c for the money i was about to pay to cummins - but it s probably not going to happen. i called a local dodge dealer and explained the situation to them- that it was already properly diagnosed by cummins- just that they cant do the warranty work for me for free. he understood and said it would be no problem if i would get it towed to him- as long as it s still under warranty. so , i asked him to check the vin to be sure and he said theres a void -or the warranty was no longer in place on the engine - but, didnt know why. so, it looks like cummins will be finishing the job after all. well, they are expensive- but, the ONLY thing that i can say right now is ''at least it will be a better job than the local dealer would do ''. the service manager did inform me that the new lift pump and vp44 wil have a 1 year/100,000 warranty - o thank god!! and i thought i just spent three grand out for nothin!!
The deal between Dodge and Cummins is that Dodge has to offer the 100,000 mile warranty, but Dodge wants to do the work themselves.
There are cases where the Dodge Dealership doesn't have a good Diesel mechanic and sends it to Cummins for warranty work, and in this instance it is covered.
It is not covered if you bypass Dodge and go directly to Cummins, there has to be a referral.
Kinda like Health Insurance.
Your primary physician has to refer you to the specialist for it to be covered.

Phox is right. I wish this were relevant to your situation, but if a Cummins B series engine is in service in another vehicle the Cummins warranty is 2 years unlimited mileage.
I've unfortunately had a VP44 replaced by a Cummins Dealer and $2467 is the number without the lift pump.
