2004.5 fuel pump died
2004.5 fuel pump died
Hit the peddle to pass and the truck stumbled and died.
Believe code was P0628 and there was one other.I was trying to get off the road.
Anyway DM towed it into dealer after saying he had a good idea it was the fuel pump as this is a common problem. He wasn't sure where the pump was but had me lookin around behind the fuel/water seperator. Thanks to this site I know the pumps in the tank so felt around for anything loose but couldn't feel much. Truck would turn over if I hit the accelerator hard but just died again.
I'm new to diesels so have to ask, what is difference between fuel pump, injector pump and lift pump? Also did I hurt anything cranking it for 5 seconds trying to restart? I read somewhere you can harm the injector pump if no fuels coming from the fuel pump.I did that about 3 times after draining water seperator and checking fuses.
I'd blame this on ULSD but I add PS every fillup.26000 miles on truck.

You didn't hurt anything by running the starter for 5 seconds at a time.

There are only 2.
lift pump, transfers fuel from your fuel tank to the fuel filter and then on to the injection pump.
Injection pump. Pressurizes the fuel and sends it off to the injectors.
Only a handful of 04.5's got the in-tank lift pump from factory. The last of the year production ran out of filter mounted pumps so a small handful got in-tank lift pumps.

The retrofit lift pump is the in-tank lift pump and It's the only lift pump available from DC. If your truck is under 100,000 miles the dealer will install it for free under warranty. Some will try and collect $100 but just tell them it's free under warranty check there warranty rules. If that don't work call DC yourself, the 800 number is in your owners manual or warranty manual. Do you guys know if the in-tank pump has any knows problems, is it an improvement?
I suppose I'd better look into a FASS since I take the family through the desert a lot and this breakdown could have been a lot more worrisome.
My only concern this time was the Honeybaked ham in the back seat getting warm.

The in-tank lift pumps have been extremely reliable when installed at the factory.
Unfortunately there have been a few retrofit lift pumps that have had a problem due to a connector in the new wiring harness needed for the new installation. Hopfully DC has taken care of this. Have your service person check things over carfully before installing the harness.

I'm really considering just upgrading to the GDP setup BEFORE my lift pump (attached to the filter housing) dies. From what I understand, I can just leave that one where it is, and install the GDP. I'd then have a 'backup' in case the GDP ever died.
By the way - has anyone had their GDP setup go south? I don't remember reading about any....

Hey bluebull, On my 2004 dually, which may be a 2004.5, I called a dealer to ask about the fuel pump, and he told me that the pump was in the tank. I looked, and I think he's right. He asked for the last 8 digits of my VIN, which are 4G218446. He told me that there were two fuel pumps in 2004, one for a 34 gal and one for a 35 gal tank. I figured it had to do with the length of bed, but maybe it has to do with the pump only. (BTW, who needs the extra 1 gallon?
) Mine is the 35 gal.

Uruiamme, Bluebull is correct in my case, I looked directly behind the fuel/water seperator (toward drivers seat) and there is a 4" tall black metal cylinder, about 1&1/2" in diameter with 2 rubber lines out the bottom. I was looking for something much bigger when the service guy had me look. I expected a truck this size to have a pump more soda can sized! I got mislead by the wires I traced back to the tank which turned out to be the fuel gauge wires. My truck is also a LB which I'll add to my sig and last 8 of VIN are 4G237168.
Icrider that's good advice and I'll be following it. I always have oil changes done at the dealer with the $39 coupon and they never once asked to replace the fuel filter.

Check the back of your filter housing there will be a small round pump that feels like it's molded into the filter housing. If there isn't one consider yourself lucky of getting a factory installed in-tank lift pump.
I know nothing about the VIN numbers as related to pumps which I doubt they are. I would say your probably more acurate that one is for a long bed and the other number for short bed.
DC did and does make 2 fuel tanks for our trucks. The 34 gallon tank is for the short bed and the 35 gallon is for the long beds. They both used the filter mounted lift pump. Let me say it again both tanks used the same lift pump. There was NOT one pump for the 34 gallon tank and a different one for the 35 gallon tank.

If you do have a filter mounted pump you could buy a $80.00 switching valve and use that pump for both your main tank and an auxilliary tank. But be fore-warned, the filter mounted pumps have a high failure rate.
If it was me and you don't want to gravity flow I would buy pump HP4600 or HP4601 from www.summitracing.com and use it as a transfer pump from your auxillary to the main tank. Wire kit for $30.00 from the same place. It might be on the same page listed as accesory item.

Just thought of something else, if you bought your truck used maybe the previous owner had it replaced or if you have had it back for lift pump problems it will have an in-tank lift pump. That is all the dealership can install under warranty.

My 04.5 has been stumbling lately, not all the time just from time to time. Is this caused by the pump getting ready to go out. Has not done it in about 3 weeks though. Truck never did die though, but i sure is scary when pulling a 35' fiver.
I just talked to the guy who drives this truck more than me. (It's a company truck) He said that amongst the ton of other things wrong with this Lemon of a Truck
that the lift pump went bad, and there is definitely one in the tank. Whether there used to be one, it sounds like there was, but as you say, not necessarily since that would be pretty slim odds. Boy, I hope we sell this truck soon because of all the other issues with it. Even if we get another Dodge, so be it, this one in particular is trash.
It's the holidays, so I will have to see about the near-filter pump later to make sure.
