The front driveshaft shouldn't spin if you are in 2wd.
But, this time of the year with cold weather the viscosity of transfer case fluid will make it turn.
Try to turn it by hand, it will be a little harder than usual, especially when compared to summertime.

I was pulling out a 82 Chevy Pickup 4x4 that was stuck in a "middle puddle" about 5 feet long, 1 foot deep maybe.
Hooked up and pulled him out without leaing idle. Looked down, the redneck didnt have a front driveshaft installed. When asked about it, the reply.
" oh 4 wheel drive stile works, tha driveshaft just makes it so 4 Wheeldrive works when I turn."
I bet my expression of omg was amazing.
