enigine won't stop
i've read about this before and if i remember right it should just be a failed fuel shut-off solenoid??? i can turn the key off and take it out of the ign and it just keeps running. had to clamp off the fuel line to stall it out...
I am not an expert on these trucks but will try to help. The way the diesel is controlled for start and cutoff is by fuel. The fuel solenoid just behind the injection pump is the control unit. It is the metal cylinder unit oriented vertically with the linkage coming out of the bottom. It is obviously not releasing. You can manually pull it down to the release position and thus the fuel cutoff. I had a problem in the start position and had to manually pull it up to the start position. I lubricated the linkage and it has been working good ever since. I would try that first and see what happens. I am not sure how to post a picture on these forums or I would send you one that shows the left side of the engine.
Some of the more knowledgeable members can give tips on troubleshooting. I would recommed that you go to Auto Zone and get the Haynes Manual for your truck. I am on my first diesel truck and with the manual I have learned a lot about my truck.

The fuel shutoff solenoid is probably stuck in the on position. You might be able to take it apart and clean / grease the body of the solenoid to make it work again, or just replace it. Its about 140$ I think.
No your problem is your starter contacts are stuck. You can disconnect the fuel selinoid to get it to stop. you can order new ones here http://www.fostertruck.com/dodge/default.htm fuel shutdown selinoids hardly ever fail they usually just need tobe cleaned, lubed and reinstalled.

If you don't take care of it right away your shutdown solenoid will burn up = $$$$
Disconnect the wire to the solenoid or bang on the starter with a hammer or rock to get it to disengage.

thanks guys,
i did disconnect the wire first thing but that still did not shut it down. tried disconnecting re-connecting and re-disconnecting with the ign on and off and still no shut down. does that tell you anything?

Sounds like rather than the starter contacts that the linkage and/or the solenoid are gunked up or rusted causing it to bind..
Time for a little cleaning. Replace the solenoid boot if it's damaged.
A few inches of 1.75 bicycle inner tube and a couple of cable ties make a good boot.
