Good idea on the breather. This IS the second seal since maybe June.

Just to add a little something to think about. I had a wiped out front driver side hub bearing that would let me run fine, but slow down, like to stop at a light and the truck would roll down to about 3 or 4 mph and lock up solid. felt like I slammed the brake pedal. To look at it from the outside I saw nothing out of the ordinary. but after lifting up the wheels, the problem was obvious. The point here is if you are new to the truck, maybe it's time to get better acquainted.

Good point. I am thinking it does not have anything to do with the front end b/c the rear tires would still turn when I let out the clutch in 1st or reverse like if you did a burnout in an automatic. Thanks for the idea though I will keep it in mind.

Well the brakes are not it. They are clean now though!

I can spin the wheels (well..they spin opposite of each other) with the rear end off the ground but if I crank it up and put it in gear the engine just bogs down.

If the tcase is in neutral and the trans is in neutral I can let the clutch out. If the tcase is in neutral and the transmission is in gear it does the same bogging down thing.

Checked the trans fluid and it is full and not terribly dirty.

Any opinions or other things to try???? I'm getting desperate. I just dont want to take it to the $tealer$hip!

Any ideas or anything? Is there a good way to see into the trans without taking it out of the truck?

Can you spin driveshaft(with hands, wheels off ground)?
Trans in neutral, TC in gear?
TC in neutral?
Are you trying to spin front drive shaft also In these test?
Sounds like in front part of TC or trans itself. Either way, both may have to come out and partial dissassembe to find. Should be very obvious when get to failure.

I think I found out what was wrong (at least I really hope and pray). I remember the guy I bought the truck from telling me he put Lucas gear oil in the trans. That was back in May '07. From what I have gathered on here the 5600 does not do too well with anything but certain lubes. I drained all the "Lucas" out and refilled with 5 quarts of Pennzoil Synchromesh. It had the Chrysler part # on it that is recommended for that trans and I read a few things on the net where people had good results with it. The shifts seem to be noticably smoother than before (don't think I am fooling myself like people with the seat of the pants dyno). It has not acted up since and I have reversed quite a bit. I am going to try it some more tomorrow.

Exclamation Help

Here is an update: The truck was driving/shifting better. The issue has changed a bit though....
It does seem to "catch" a bit every once in a while when I start off, epecially if the truck has rolled back any. (Keep in mind I am always pulling a trailer). I also noticed a screeching noise that started yesterday like a u-joint or bearing or something.
Yesterday I stopped, put the truck in neutral and let out on the clutch.
While I was sitting there with the truck running it sounded like the trans tried to go into gear a couple times without me touching anything. It was very slight. Nothing dramatic.

Could this be a clutch issue?

Your description: Stopped, truck in neutral, clutch out, and tries to grab.
This is too wierd. The description you gave is more like a syncro was binding and trying to grab. Have never encountered before, however with history of wrong(?) fluid guess it is possible. Might be time to consider downing the trans.

It IS weird. When it "tries to grab" it is very light. It's basically like the engine surges a bit. If I remember correctly this has only happened twice. Drove the truck all day yesterday without the trailer and it ran like nothing has ever been wrong. I am hoping someone reads this and will have had something like this happen to them. I would LOVE to pinpoint the issue. The fluid could have been it.

Well, I am going to break down and take the truck to a mechanic in the morning. I just haven't figured it out. I got off of the highway today after about a 15 min trip at 60 mph pulling an 18' trailer with no more than 1500 lbs in it and started feeling a knocking/tapping on the shifter and could hear it when I rolled the window down. The knocking/tapping went along with the drivetrain speed. I almost puked. Just when I thought it was over.

Updated update The "locking up" I was trying to describe seems to be occuring when the trans is trying to go into 2 gears at once. I was also told that the 3rd gear may be the culprit. I got a new trans and now I am waiting on a clutch and flywheel.
