Crankshaft Positioning Sensor

I found a very good article on here by "Cattle Hauler" and have determined this is the exact problem my truck has been having. Only thing I don't understand is when I went to O'reilly's to have my code (1693) cleared, they told me the code read "Cam Shaft Positiong Sensor". Are the cam and crank sensors the same thing? I know the crank sensor is the one mounted behind the starter. When I was at Napa they showed me the picture of the cam sensor and from what I remember it looks the same as the crank sensor I now see on the net. Any Help??

I might be wrong, but I believe in 01 it is a combination crank/cam sensor, not 2 different sensors.

Cam position sensor is located below the VP44. I thought the '01's had done away with the crank position sensor, but I guess I am wrong on that one... (mine doesn't have a crank position sensor at any rate).

Ok my it looks like where the sensor is supposed to be according to the pictures a have a plate that just covers up where the block is cast for the sensor. So i assume I do not have that sensor? Let me give you my symptoms...

About a week ago i noticed my check engine light on...had a p1693 code and after scanning came up cam shaft positioning sensor. Cleared it and within 50 miles it came on again. Said screw it and kept driving. Now the I finally noticed that when the light goes on, I lose my tachometer and the truck loses about 50% of its power. After a couple of minutes the tach. starts working and sometimes the light will even go off. Currently the tach will hardly even work now and light just stays on so its time to get it fixed before the problem multiplies... Runs great when tach. works, and opposite when tach. doesn't work.

It sounds like it's definitely the cam position sensor. Never had the issue myself as I replaced the sensor while the VP44 was out (it's a lot easier that way). Also check the connectors for corrosion while you're in there...

Is there a secret to getting this sensor out??? I fought it for an hour and on got the connector appart. Tried from the bottom and from the top. Any tips? I can't even tell what kind of bolt it is, looks like either an allen or star head.

It's a real bear to change with the injection pump in place, or so I have been told. I replaced mine while the VP44 was out, which made the task extremely simple. As far as the bolt, it should be a hex head (allen wrench), but I don't recall what size unfortunately...

I think in the morning im going to try and loosen and move the wiring pack. Should gain me an inch or so of clearance for my hand. Hope it does the trick.

Well guys I think I've exhausted myself on this one. I don't see this sensor getting changed without the pump in the way. I heading out soon to talk to a local truck mechanic unless you have any last thoughts...all for a $50 sensor.
